Cracks within separatist camp wide and open | Kashmir Unrest | | ET Report Srinagar, Oct 10: Cracks within the separatist camp are widening with each passing day as the ongoing shutdown in Kashmir which has entered into fourth month is going nowhere. Sources told Early Times that Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani is feeling the heat as the protest calendar being announced by him has outlived its utility and people have started questioning the logic behind pro-longing the shutdown and keeping people caged. "A section within separatists has told Geelani to come up with a different strategy if he wants to remain relevant. People are fed up and they have openly started defying the protest calendar," sources said. They said miscreants have been pushed away from the main roads and they have taken control of the link roads and peripheries. "These miscreants pelt stones on vehicles and disrupt the movement of people within mohallas. There is total anarchy and resentment is brewing against separatists as their anti-people policies have made the lives of common people miserable and they are at the verge of starvation," they added. Insiders claimed that security agencies tightening noose around separatists and blocking their funding channels has created uneasiness among the henchmen and paid agents of separatists, who are feeling the heat due to funds being choked and Police being after them. They are trying to maintain a low profile to save themselves from being booked under Public Safety Act (PSA). "A few elements are instigating young boys and girls to hit the streets to keep the pot boiling. Students who have been staging protest against the government's decision to conduct the exams are being roped in by the separatists to become a part of the ongoing agitation," they added. Sources said the ring leaders have been assigned the job to instigate the students. "These henchmen are misleading students by telling them that if they stage protests their exams would be deferred," they added. "The Hurriyat hawk in his last calendar had asked students to come on streets and stage protests. The prolonged unrest has isolated Geelani and the people, who initially use to hover around him have deserted him. Even his son (Naeem Geelani), who is a government employee is maintaining distance from him (Geelani) since the day he was questioned by the policemen for his role in the ongoing unrest" the source added. He said the businessmen, whom Geelani had assured that Azadi would come within two months are staying away from the hawk and are counting their losses. "Even if Geelani calls of the shutdown now it won't serve any purpose as we have lost the working season. We had told him in the very beginning that if he (Geelani) fails this time he should not call for a shutdown in future," said a businessman. He expressed dismay over the fact that separatists are now trying to use the students to keep the hartal alive. "It's high time for separatists to accept defeat and let the people live in peace. Asking students to become cannon fodder is deplorable," he added. |
