SRINAGAR, Oct 10: The security agencies have tightened the vigil in Kashmir in view of increased militant attacks and have plans to install close circuit television cameras at key locations to keep proper surveillance.
Rifle snatching incidents and militant attacks have increased since the unrest in Kashmir. The incidents assume significance in wake of the reports that around 100 youth from Kashmir have joined militant ranks during the last three months and are in need of weapons to carry out attacks amid unrest.
Now the security agencies have tightened the vigil and are going to install CCTV cameras at key locations to keep proper check on militant movement and those who create law and order problem in the Valley.
"Over 50 CCTV cameras are being installed at important places in Kashmir especially in south Kashmir where militants have shown significant presence," a senior official said.
"Monitoring of these CCTVs would be done by separate Control Rooms to be established," the official said.
During the last three months, many incidents of rile snatching have taken places in the Valley. "By installing CCTV cameras we can identify people who snatch rifles and carry out attacks. They will also help us to identify people who take advantage of current unrest by resorting to violence," the official said.
While in Kashmir security has been beefed up in view of the surgical attack as security agencies apprehended that militants may react to it. The security forces were carrying out the checks of vehicles and identity cards at various places. Further the security forces presence was also strengthened to ensure any attack by militant is foiled. Vehicles entering Srinagar were being allowed only after being properly checked by the security personnel.
"Security all along the LoC has been tightened to ensure that any infiltration bid by militants receives a hot reception," a senior officer said.
Village headmen have been asked to report to the police if unknown or suspicious individuals are seen in their areas. More checkpoints have been set up.
For the past over a month, militants have been showing their presence by carrying out attacks. The attacks have caused loss of life to the armed forces.
Earlier, Valley had witnessed considerable decrease in militant activities with negligible militant attacks for several years.
However, police sources said there are inputs that militants have been moving in the night hours in several areas of Kashmir.
They said there are reports that militants have moved from villages to town and their main focus remains cities especially in south Kashmir.
"CRPF, BSF and Police are jointly carrying out night patrolling across the Valley. The militants have not only shown their presence in north Kashmir but also in south and central Kashmir. We are analysing the situation how the militants are showing the presence in all parts of the state," a senior.
