10/10/2016 11:10:28 PM
Jehangir Rashid

SRINAGAR, Oct 10: An army man and a cop were injured after militants took refuge in a government building in the Pampore area and fired upon the security forces personnel. Two to three militants are reported to be holed up inside the building.
Reports said that militants in the wee hours today entered the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) building at Pampore in the outskirts of Srinagar city. After managing their entry the militants fired upon the security forces personnel and in no time a gunfight started between the two sides.
Reports said that at about 6: 30 AM the militants fired some shots to create panic in the area and immediately took shelter in the top most storey of EDI building. It has come to the fore that the militants used a boat to reach the EDI building following which they fired some shots towards the security forces personnel. Pertinent to mention here that river Jhelum flows in the backyard of EDI building. An army man sustained injuries in the initial gun burst and the two sides traded fire for half an hour or so. The militants took refuge in the EDI building and fired at the security forces at regular intervals. The gun shots broke the calm of the area and the sound of gun shots rattled the entire area as well. The army soldier injured has been identified as Naik Rohit Roy from 311 Gorkha Regiment.
It would be in place to mention here that one of the buildings of EDI was gutted during a gunfight between militants and security forces in February this year. Nine persons including three militants and three security forces were killed in the gunfight at that time and the two sides traded fire for more than 48 hours. This time around the militants have taken refuge in a building that is located parallel to the gutted building. The seven storied state of the art building has suffered huge damages and the latest reports suggest that the building has gone up in flames. Army used IEDs and rockets to blast the building. Militants also fired upon the fire tender that was rushed to douse the flames in the building.
The EDI building is located in the Sempora-Pampore area on Srinagar-Jammu national highway. It is located in the South Kashmir's Pulwama district in the outskirts of summer capital of the state. The EDI building is placed at a strategic location and there is proper security at the entrance of the building. Army and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel are always posted on the highway that runs parallel to the EDI buildings.
Reports said that late in the evening as the holed up militants could not be zeroed in by the security forces the EDI building was blasted following which flames went up from a portion of the building. The fire has severely damaged the building and the firing has stopped for the time being. There is no clue about the militants and it is not known whether they are alive or have been killed in the encounter. Due to the fading light the operation has been suspended for the time being and it would resume in the morning tomorrow.
