Hectic political activities begin to float Third Front | | | Majid Ahmad SRINAGAR, Sept 25: With assembly elections drawing nearer, hectic political activities have begun to float a Third Front in Jammu and Kashmir that will act as a buffer between ruling National Conference (NC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Sources told Early Times that groundwork to float the Third Front has already commenced. "The Front is likely to comprise the mainstream political leaders who share common agenda and can give a tough competition to National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party and Congress in 2014 assembly elections," they said. In this direction, eight political parties on Wednesday held a joint meeting here, flaying policies of the NC-led coalition government and pressing for Indo-Pak dialogue to end "political uncertainty" in the state. "We are of the considered opinion that there is no security solution to the Kashmir issue. The leadership of both India and Pakistan need to exhibit statesmanship to find out acceptable solution to all outstanding issues, including Kashmir," said a statement issued after the meeting. The meeting was attended by state CPI(M) secretary MY Tarigami, Peoples Democratic Front president Hakim Mohammad Yasin, state Samajawdi Party chief Sheikh Abdul Rehman, Awami National Conference vice-president Muzaffar Shah, JKNDF head Abdul Rashid Kabuli, International Democratic Party president ID Khajuria, State CPI Secretary AR Tukru and Lok Janshakti Party chief Sanjay Saraf. "Talks are in the initial stages and a few prominent politicians who do not belong to NC or PDP have asked their activists to enrol more and more people in their groups as a run up to the constitution of the Third Front," one of the politicians working on the new political grouping told Early Times. Independent MLA, Er Rasheed, who represents Langate constituency in the state assembly may also join the new political entity in future, he added. Sources revealed that Third Front formation has also received a nod from New Delhi. However, there are some hiccups in the formation of the Front. "The most important problem is the issue that who would head the new front. There is no consensus among the stakeholders on the issue of heading the front and every leader is interested in heading the new political formation," sources said. Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir, Hakim Yasin and MY Tarigami had tried to form Third Front ahead of 2008 Assembly elections in the state. However, the formation couldn't happen at that time as Mir and Hakim fielded candidates against each other in several constituencies. |
