Stage being set for making tall promises to people in J&K

Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 25: With the Lok Sabha election dates drawing near political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir, as is the case in other states in the country, are readying themselves for dishing out promises to people. Many political leaders, even of least consequences, may not hesitate promising moon to people if they vote in favour of their party. In fact the preparation for the Lok Sabha election in Jammu and Kashmir is going to be an exercise for setting the stage for the Assembly election due late next year.
In reality neither the main political parties nor the people in Jammu and Kashmir attach as much importance to the Lok Sabha election as is being attached to the Assembly poll. The reason being obvious. The state has six Lok Sabha constituencies and these six MPs may hardly make any valid contribution for making or destabilising central Governments. MPs from UP, Bihar, West Bengal and other larger states can act as game changers on their numerical strength. It is but natural. Six MPs from Jammu and Kashmir cannot expect to play any major role in the Government making in the centre as 40 to 80 MPs from other states can have a say in the formation of the ruling party in the centre. And if the previous Lok Sabha elections are any guide the state has not been able to send all the six elected members to the Lok Sabha from one particular party. Invariably it is three MPs from NC, two from Congress one as independent, or four MPs from NC and two from Congress.
What is of greater interest to people in Jammu and Kashmir than the Lok Sabha poll is the Assembly election that helps people to have a Government of their choice. A Government that can make or mar their future, a Government that can shape the political, security and economic scenario. And in the Assembly poll local issues dominate the electioneering. But this time since there is not a big gap between the Lok Sabha and the Assembly election political leaders believe that the results of the Lok Sabha election could have some impact on the outcome of the Assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir. The first political leader who has started treating the Lok Sabha election as a signal for change not only in India but in Jammu and Kashmir state too. Mufti Sayeed has said that coming Parliament elections would set the trend for change in Jammu and Kashmir. "The Parliament elections would be a trailer of campaign launched by PDP to change present system of corruption and mis-governance. It will set a trend for change in Assembly elections," Mufti has stated. He has claimed that people's urge for change is gaining momentum with every passing day. Joining of a large number of people in PDP is indication that there is strong wave for change in the State.
Since political leaders and workers, belonging to other parties, have started joining the PDP it has given new hope to the Mufti to foresee bright future for his party. Exuding confidence that PDP would sweep the Lok Sabha elections, Mufti said that people were fed up with the mis-governance and rampant corruption in the state and are waiting for an opportunity to give a befitting reply to this government. For both the Lok Sabha and the Assembly election the PDP is seeking mandate for changing destiny of the people of Jammu and Kashmir for which he asked his party workers to intensify the on-going campaign for change.
He is of the view that next Lok Sabha elections are an opportunity to channelize anger of the people against NC led government, Other parties, including the NC, the Congress, the BJP, the Panthers and the Peoples' Conference, too seem to have stepped up their campaign for winning the Lok Sabha and Assembly seats. Though these leaders have started campaigning for the Lok Sabha poll, even when the poll schedule has not been announced, their ultimate aim is to prepare their workers and poll managers for setting the stage for the Assembly election. Indications are that the next Lok Sabha and the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir may witness a neck and neck contest among four main mainstream organizations.
Hence political leaders and poll campaigners may set a new record in making tall promises to people. But by the time campaigning for the Lok Sabha and later for the Assembly election gets going voters may face tough time in deciding which candidate deserves their vote because in majority of the six Lok Sabha constituencies and 87 Assembly segments it would be a multi-cornered contest. One does expect voters to spring a surprise by voting in favour of change or will they vote for the status quo?
