Hurriyat has outlived its existence

SRINAGAR, Jan 6: Has the separatist amalgam (Hurriyat Conference) outlived its existence, has it became redundant forum, has it lost the credibility, has it lost the public support it once enjoyed in trouble torn Kashmir and last but not least have the separatist leaders got exposed for their overt and covert deeds-certainly yes.
Lacking maturity and leadership qualities, having no concern for the miseries and sufferings inflicted upon the common people and building edifices and doing politics on dead bodies, the Hurriyat leaders are now fighting on properties. Recently a little known separatist organization alleged one of its leaders of amazing wealth in crores (without what can be termed as not giving due share to his fellow party men).
Now the big fight, fight over constitutionality of their constitution. Some of them term the Hurriyat constitution as a heavenly book which can never be amended-without pondering over the fact that how much they have changed and how much they have constituted over the years. Some even interpret it in their own wisdom and make a mockery of it but the two camps have certainly two things in common-that they have developed huge vested interest in status-quo and that they never mean what they say and say what they never mean.
Now coming directly to today's development- after being expelled from the conglomerate by the Hurriyat (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq by shooting a letter to the Pakistan administered Kashmir Chapter of Hurriyat, Freedom party chief Shabir Shah, National Front Chairman, Nayeem Ahmad and Mahaz-e-Azadi chief Azam Inquilabi Monday claimed their stake over Hurriyat (M).
Without naming Mirwaiz Umar Farooq or any other Hurriyat leader, Shah, Khan, Naqash and Inquilabi said in a joint statement, "The disruptive elements will not be tolerated in the Hurriyat Conference and we will run the forum according to the goals set by Martyrs and wishes of the freedom loving people."
Pertinently, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had some days earlier expelled the said parties and leaders calling them as "indisciplined". He had written a letter to Pakistan administered Kashmir Chapter of his faction of Hurriyat directing it not to entertain their representatives in their meetings.
Shah, Khan, Inquilabi and Naqash had not been attending Hurriyat programs from some time and they have been working outside Hurriyat (M). There were "public scuffles" as well between the two groups in past.
"The secret letter written to the PaK Chapter of Hurriyat is childish and it has been written by those who are using the forum for their own interests and against the movement," the statement said.
It added, "These elements have been working against the freedom loving people and against the freedom struggle."
Again without naming any leaders of Hurriyat (M) the statement said, "We have some serious differences with the people in Hurriyat but ironically they have cleverly called these differences as a matter of discipline."
The joint statement signed by Shah, Khan and others reads, "A meeting of Hurriyat leaders was organised at Shah's residence and it was felt that the disruptive elements within Hurriyat have caused a great damage to the movement and the forum."
Leveling serious allegations against Hurriyat (M) leaders, the statement said, "They have failed to run the amalgam according to its constitution so it was decided in the meeting that Hurriyat will now be run by those who have a clear past."
Alleging Hurriyat (M) leaders of sabotaging the agreement between Sayed Ali Shah Geelani and them, the statement said, "The disruptive elements in Hurriyat have time and again sabotaged the endeavors of unification as was proved when they sabotaged the agreement made with Sayed Ali Shah Geelani led Hurriyat in 2008."
"It is a proved fact that the anti movement elements present in the Hurriyat Conference have failed to take the resistance forum forward so we have decided to run Hurriyat according to the wishes of the people," the statement said adding "In our meeting it was unanimously decided to take over the Hurriyat and run it as the movement requires."
"Few people present in Hurriyat advocate secret talks and even bilateralism even knowing the fact that Hurriyat constitution does not permit it," the statement said adding "They are using the Hurriyat platform for their personal gains."
"Hurriyat belongs to only those who have rendered sacrifices since long and the platform is presently being misused by some of its leaders against the freedom struggle."
This not for the first time that the separatist have leveled serious allegations against each other. This has been going on since long. And the people have been watching this silently but sensibly.
