According to local residents of Kalantra Balla and Payeen that the water supply to the villages has been snapped for the past one month and women have been forced to fetch water for consumption from the nearest conventional water points like local rivulets and springs which might have got contaminated due to recent floods. Agitating residents blocked Kalantra-Kreeri road near Peith Check and raised slogans against the Public Health Engineering (PHE) division Kreeri and Baramulla. "In absence of water supply, we are forced to consume contaminated water from the nallah, they lamented. "Children and old of these areas are vulnerable to water-borne infections caused by contaminated water," said Sonaullha Rather, during the protest. Rather however said despite repeated representations to concerned authorities, the PHE Division Kreeri, Baramulla and Tangmarag have yet done nothing to alleviate their problems. Protestors said, "We are facing acute shortage of drinking water and are forced to use water from the conventional water resources which is not safe amid the apprehensions of breaking out water borne diseases as water might have contaminated die stagnated flood water in flood ravaged valley. Cautioning the concerned authorities to restore water supply at earliest protestors said If the supply is not restored at the earliest, they are not left any option but to take to the streets in Baramulla. When contacted a senior official of PHE division Kreeri told 'Early Times' that eighty percent water supply to these areas has been restored and there may be some areas left where the supply would be restored in a few days.
