Five years on, many await completion, others rendered defunct | Solar Power Projects hit pitch darkness | | Bijay Charak
Jammu, Oct 3: Despite being former Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr. Farooq Abdullah failed to extend the benefits of solar energy to the J&K and despite his clout and influence in the state, many a proposed projects have either been abandoned half way or not taken up at all. One such example is Solar Power Plant (SPP) which is being installed in Sub District Hospital Hiranagar for the last five years but is still incomplete. Sources informed Early Times that the SPP project with 9.75 KWs capacity, was sanctioned in the year 2008-09 for SDH Hirangar, and its estimate cost was Rs. 29.25 Lakhs for which Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) GOI had sanctioned Rs. 21.94 Lakhs and the share of state government was Rs. 7.31 Lakhs. The completion date of the project was in the year 2011, but shockingly, almost three years have elapsed but the project is far from completion, sources said. Sources further said that while SPP at SDH Hiranagar could not be completed, the others which did see the light of the day reportedly became defunct after just couple of months of their inauguration. "The project was sanction by Union Government to meet the requirement of power during curtailment hours in health institution, but most of them were not installed completely and few became defunct within a period of six months of their inauguration", sources said and added that inspite of repeated communication to concerned department, no one cared about them. "The only job of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy was to sanction funds for solar plants and make payments to contractors who installed them and there was no provision for the after repair and maintenance," sources divulged. A doctor wishing anonymity said that it is not a single example, majority of solar project in various departments were waiting for completion and others were defunct. He apprehended that suib standard gadgets were allowed to be installed for pecuniary benefits. |
