Awantipora gunfight: One Hizb militant killed, two escaped | | | Saahil Suhail
Srinagar, Oct 3: Security forces on Friday killed a militant affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) outfit during hours long gunfight which broke out yesterday evening in Charsoo Awantipora area of South Kashmir. During the gunfight two other militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen outfit including Commander Reyaz Ahmad Naikoo alias Zubair-ul-Islam managed to break down the cordon and escaped. According to police officials, gunfight broke out on Thursday evening when joint contingents of Indian army and police cordoned off village Charsoo Awantipora in Pulwama district. They said that militants fired on the forces when they were cordoning off the village triggering fierce gun battle. Police officials told Early Times that gunfight resumed today in the morning after it was suspended yesterday in late evening due to darkness. During the hours long gunfight one militant of the hizb outfit who had recently joined the militant ranks was gunned down by the security forces while as two other militants managed to break down the cordon. Slain militant, a father of three was identified as Showkat Ahmad Kassab, a local cadre who had joined the militant ranks before two months. DIG South Kashmir, Vijay Kumar confirmed the killing of Showket and said that they have recovered the assault rife from his procession which he had stolen from a policeman earlier. He said that operation was carried out on specific intelligence report. Soon after the gunfight, violent protests broke out in the area resulting chaos and traffic jam on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. Hundreds of youth clashed with police and hurled stones. Situation in the area was tense when this report has being filled. |
