After Sonia, Rahul, BJP leaders join lip-service race in Valley
Missing Govt remains submerged even after 26-days

Srinagar, Oct 3: As the people of devastated Kashmir are finding it hard to fight the aftermath of the worst flood of the century, politicians of main political parties, including Congress and BJP, are making a bee line to the state. The mere lip service offered by these politicians has added insult to the injuries of the victims and poor response of the State Government post floods has left them in a lurch.
Soon after All India Congress Committee (AICC) chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her son, Rahul Gandhi, visited the flood hit areas in Kashmir earlier this week, State BJP leaders joined the race and paid a visit to the flood affected areas.
The high level BJP delegation led by Member Parliament Jugal Kishore, also included the former Health Minister of the State Chaudhary Lal Singh. The BJP leaders met the victims and claimed that State Government has Rs 1000 Cr at its disposal to help the flood affected people of the state. They expressed apprehensions about money not reaching the victims. "It seems Ministers of the ruling NC-Cong coalition want to fill their coffers," the BJP leaders alleged.
On the other hand Sonia and Rahul expressed dismay over "Centre not lending a helping hand" to the flood victims. They claimed had Congress been in power at the Centre "all possible assistance would have been provided to the victims," they said.
Leaders of both the national parties have tried to score points over each other and have put the ball in State Government's court. As the politics over the relief and rehabilitation process is gaining momentum the victims are waiting for the State Government to react which seems confused and caught in the quagmire.
At the first place it has categorized the collapsed houses in Kucha and Pacca categories. For Kucha houses State Government has sanctioned Rs 17,600 and for Pacca houses, Rs 70,000 have been kept. It's a different issue that so far relief has not reached any of the victims and the entire process has got stuck in official wrangles. The victims whose houses have collapsed have to run behind Patwaris, Naib Tehsildars, Tehsildars and Junior Engineers to get the relief sanctioned. What an irony! Onus of proving whether the collapsed house, was a Kacha one or Pacca, lies on the victims.
The flood victims who are still waiting for water to leave the places where their dwellings used to stand before September 7, 2014 are finding it hard to cope with life as their entire world stands buried beneath the rubble. They are hoping against the hope that they may be able to retrieve at least a few valuables which they had left behind. They seem least interested in the sermons being delivered by the visiting politicians who are eyeing the forthcoming elections.
Both the top Congress and BJP leaders have offered lip service to the people and have given them just mere assurances. On the other hand State Government is calculating the losses and is busy issuing the statements. Till date nothing has been done to help the victims to at least clear the rubble of their devastated homes. Victims are hiring men and machinery on their own as no official help is coming forward.
Kashmir is in a mess and politicians irrespective of any party they belong to stand exposed as they have failed to help the people. The poor response of the State Government post floods has disappointed the people. They have been left to fend for themselves. The relief camps which were set up at different places by the locals and the NGOs across the Valley have slowly vanished.
Recently hundreds of flood victims assembled outside a Gurdwara at Baghat Barzulla in uptown here after a Sikh Minister from Punjab arrived there with truckloads of wheat, rice and other essential commodities. The victims said that they are putting up in the houses of their acquaintances and they being there has put extra burden on them. "By collecting some relief material we want to reduce their burden," the victims said.
On the other hand announcement of the State Government to provide free ration has run into a rough weather as the people managing the ration depots are claiming that they have not received any written order about it. Mismanagement is ruling the roost and the Government seems to be the worst hit as it has failed to come out of the submerged waters even after 26-days after the floods inundated Kashmir.
At present thousands of people stand displaced and have no clue about what future holds for them. One hopes the BJP leaders, who took the stock of the situation apprise the Centre about the pathetic plight of the victims and the Congress top brass too finds some way to help the traumatized people of JK. Mere lip service is not going to help anybody's cause.
