Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 19: The carelessness of Power Development Department (PDD) has resulted in the death of one dozen daily wagers and the need base workers while carrying out the repairs of transmission lines. The ones who survived after receiving the shock, though living, have been paralyzed. Over the past few years PDD has turned out to be a death trap for the daily wagers and for the need base workers and during the last 10 years as many as 60 employees died while rendering their services due to the negligence of the department. "I was repairing a transformer at Wadwan some years back which was in the knowledge of the authorities as well. But as ill luck would have it, the wires became live all of a sudden and I received a shock from a High Tension wire, leaving me unconscious. But thanks to Almighty that I still among my family members," said Ghulam Ahmad from Budgam. Ahmad said that one or two accidents are enough to learn a lesson for ever but for PDD, it is not ready despite the fact that such accidents have consumed the lives of the dozens of poor employees. The daily wagers of the department and the need base workers are of the opinion that the higher ups are enjoying themselves and it is the poor lot who are being pushed into grave. Not only this after such accidents the dependents of such victims suffer for want of the two time meals. The recent accident which took place in the Pattan area of the North Kashmir wherein a line man of the PDD received the electric shock while repairing the transmission line. This accident has moved the hearts of the people of the area. What was more shocking that the department couldn't take time out simply to condole the death publically? "The deceased is the father of the two children and whole of his family is living in the abject poverty. The sole bread earner of the family has died because of the negligence of the PDD and at the same time it has sent shivers down the spines of the daily wagers and in the need base employees as well," said some people at Pattan while talking to Early Times. These people said that such accidents take place because there is a lack of coordination between the employees at the grid stations and the field staff. The people at the stations restore the supply without any formal confirmation and it results in the tragic death of the poor employees of the department. Despite repeated attempts Chief Engineer, PDD (EM&RE) Bashir Ahmad Khan did not pick up the phone. |
