Er Rashid pits Jammu against Kashmir | Citizenship rights to West Pak Refugees | | Organizes seminar; participants vow to tread 'communal' path ET Report JAMMU, Jan 19: The Awami Itihad Party (AIP) led by the MLA Langate Engineer Rashid today organized a seminar titled "Conspiracy to change demographic and constitutional identity of Jammu and Kashmir" here against Centre's purported move to grant citizenship rights to West Pakistan refugees. "If Delhi wants to settle these refugees in JK it should talk to Pakistan directly. JK should not be chosen for their settlement in any case. Demography of this state was changed in 1947 when five lakh Muslims were massacred in Jammu. We will not let this to happen again," sources quoted one of the speakers as having said. One of the speakers, they said, had to face the embarrassment when he said that Kashmiri leadership should follow a secular path. He was questioned by some speakers sitting on the stage. "Kashmiris have always followed secular path but it is Jammu that has always indulged in communalism. We need to shun our apologetic approach," participants told the speaker. The theme of the seminar was anti-Jammu as all the participants had trained their guns on people of Jammu and what they called "communal politics." Er Rashid said the settlement of WPRs would have dangerous implications on Jammu and Kashmir and would overturn the Muslim majority of state into minority. "I will oppose the move tooth and nail," he said. Surprisingly, the seminar was organized by a mainstream politician who has to swear by the constitution of India to take oath as legislator. "It seems Er Rashid wants to remain in news that's why he performs these stunts. No one takes him seriously," said a politician. "If he (Er Rashid) is so much concerned about Kashmir and separatists he should leave mainstream politics and join separatist camp," the politician added. Since the day issue of granting citizenship rights to West Pakistan Refugees has come to fore, "issueless" separatists and other irrelevant people for hogging the headlines have created a row over it. They seem to be trying their best to stir hornet's nest to create a situation like 2008 Amarnath land row and once again pit Kashmir against Jammu. "They are building up the momentum ahead of summer season to trigger unrest to keep the pot boiling. One can understand that separatists have reason to do so as they want to appease their bosses sitting across the Line of Control. Why mainstream politicians are joining the chorus needs to be ascertained. Is it they too have found new bosses on the other side?" opined an analyst. A Kashmir watcher while talking to Early Times said, "People of Kashmir who were recently hit by floods seem least interested in the WPR issue. They are striving hard for their rehabilitation and are trying their best to recover the losses which they suffered during floods. Only a handful of people are out to preach hatred and communalism." He said Er Rashid, whose party could only manage to win single seat across Kashmir has earned the reputation of poking his nose in every issue irrespective of whether it falls in his domain or not. "West Pakistan refugees are living in Jammu for past 66 years as second grade citizens. There is no harm in granting them citizenship rights," he added. |
