JAMMU, Jan 19: It has become customary with fanatics, pro-Pakistan elements and votaries of the two-nation concept in Kashmir, who cleansed the Valley of all Kashmiri Hindus in January 1990 to convert the Valley into a one-community region, to abuse Jammu, dismiss the Jammu electorate as communal and describe Jammu as the hub of rightwing Hindu organizations. They are abusing the Jammu electorate on a daily basis, particularly since December 23, when the Jammu electorate voted overwhelmingly for the BJP, which fought the election on developmental planks and did not rake up any political issue. What has rattled the separatist and communal forces in the Valley was the grand success of the BJP, which won 25 seats, including four from the erstwhile Doda district and two from Rajouri district, considered by the communalists and separatists their pocket boroughs. They are taking the success of the BJP to mean the dilution of the Kashmiri monopoly over the state, as also a threat to their sectarian secessionist movement.
On Sunday, the so-called Er Rashid, MLA Langate, denounced the Jammu electorate as communal and warned the PDP of dire consequences in case it forged an alliance with the BJP to form the Government in the state. He not only condemned the BJP but also the people of Jammu province and expressed the highly provocative view that Jammu is the hub of rightwing Hindu organizations. "Let us keep in mind that it is the communal agenda that has helped BJP to come into power in New Delhi and also get twenty five seats in J&K. Unfortunately Jammu has been the hub of right wing Hindu organizations right from 1947 because of the unfinished agenda of partition. The facts reveal that in other states BJP can soften its stand over issues if it needs a coalition with regional parties but it cannot dilute its hard stand over various issues vis-a-vis J&K, as it may not only harm its image among the majority community throughout India but the party would lose its vote bank in Jammu," he shamelessly said to cause an affront to the self-respect of the people of Jammu province who have been accommodating refugees of all varieties as well as victims of fanaticism since 1947 at their own cost and in the larger national interest. .
The Jinnah in Er Rashid did not stop just there. He ridiculed the newly-elected BJP MLAs and further said: "The bitter truth is that Jammuites voted purely on communal lines and ensured success of many BJP candidates who were unknown even in their own constituencies, while people in Kashmir adopted a different line…If PDP enters into a coalition with BJP it will have to fully justify the alliance. It cannot simply runaway by claiming that BJP has agreed not to touch controversial issues because the parameters of justice demand that PDP should seek categorical guarantees from BJP regarding its formula of self rule and ultimate resolution of Kashmir despite, but the circumstances reveal BJP may never be in a mode to agree to the genuine demands of PDP. The continuous suspense gives people of Kashmir a sense of defeat and they genuinely get irritated, but the argument that not entering into alliance with BJP amounts to betrayal of mandate of Jammuites who have overwhelmingly voted for BJP does not hold water…Even if Omar Abdullah's offer of unconditional support to PDP is not based on sincerity, it will be difficult for PDP to explain why it has rejected NC offer. PDP needs to move with cautiousness and take a decision which should not hurt the sentiments of people of Kashmir".
The likes of Rashid need to be isolated and punished for adopting a line that is outrageous and that insults the people of Jammu province in general and the Jammu's liberal and out-and-out nationalistic electorate. It is important to note that Jammu is perhaps the one region in the country which can be described as a oasis of peace and communal amity. It is surprising that political players in Jammu are watching the anti-Jammu activities being carried on by the separatist forces in the Valley as a mute spectator. |
