Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 27 : With the slackness of State Tourism Department, many hoteliers and guest house owners are ruling the roost as more than ninety five hotels; guest house in the state have failed to renew their registration for the last 13 years.
Sources told Early Times that many hoteliers and guest house owner and others associated with tourism trade, in sheer violation of Tourist Trade Act, are causing huge damage to the state exchequer due to negligence of Tourism Department. They alleged that the Tourism department has no record regarding the information regarding periodical inspection of the hotels guest houses etc conducted by the Department during the period 2008-13.
Notwithstanding the hollow claims of tourism department that notices had been issued time to time through print media to all the hoteliers, travel agents, dealers and restaurants etc. who are running their business without registration/ renewal to apply before the prescribed authority for registration and renewal for their units, still the situation has not improved and many establishments are running their business with impunity.
Pertinently, the persons dealing with tourists and for matters connected therewith are to be registered under the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Registration of Tourist Trade Act, 1978 but the provisions of the Act had not been implemented with letter and spirit.
They further informed that every person intending to operate a hotel in a tourist area shall before operating it apply for registration to the prescribed authority in the prescribed manner. Notwithstanding anything contained in sub section(1) any person already operating a hotel in a tourist area on the date the notification under clause (n) of section 2 is issued shall apply for registration within three months from the aforesaid date; Provided that where before the commencement of Jammu and Kashmir Registration of Tourist Trade (Amendment) Act, 1982, any person as aforesaid could not apply for registration within the time specified above he shall so apply for registration within six months after such commencement. Similarly, the periodic renewal of registration of hotels, tourist guests is mandatory for the owners and non compliance can attracts strict action against the violators by the Tourism Department.
