Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 2: Breaking all its previous record of nearly three decades, the unseasonal rainfall and hailstorm has damaged wheat crop and vegetables in thousands of hectares of area of Jammu region, increasing woes of farmers, who have suffered worst ever damage to their crop. Sources informed Early Times that nearly thirty years back, in the year 1984, unseasonal rains had totally damaged the wheat crop and if there would be more rains in coming days, the wheat crop would be completely destroyed in low lying areas of Jammu province.
As per the communiqué sent by Department of Agriculture to Metrology wing of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology, it has been mentioned that 52-70 percent damage has been reported in Rabi crop including wheat, vegetables and mustard.
"Maximum damage has been reported in low lying areas of Jammu, Samba and Kathua where in nearly 50 percent of crop has been damaged while 20-30 percent damage has been recorded in Udhampur, Reasi, Ramban, Kishtwar, Poonch ,Doda and Rajori", sources said.
According to Metrology department of SKAUST, in the month of March the average estimated rain fall has been recorded as 68.5 mm but breaking all previous records, this year 388.4 mm rainfall has been recorded in the month of March.
Source in department informed that due to water logging in low lying areas, Rabi crop was badly damaged and if there would be more rains in coming days, the entire complete Rabi crop would be destroyed.
He further said that wheat crop was in maturity stage and wheat crop required 20-25 degree Celsius temperature for reaping but due to frequent rains fall and plunge in temperature, crop has been witnessing huge damage.
Dr. Meenakshi Gupta of Metrology Department of Sher-E-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKAUST) said that in the coming days there were possibilities of rainfall and if there would be more rains, the damages would increase further.
