2000 trucks, 700 vehicles cleared on Jammu-Srinagar NH Batote-Kishtwar NH at the verge of collapse | | | Asif Iqbal Naik Early Times Report
jammu, Apr 2: The Jammu-Srinagar and Jammu-Kishtwar Highways continue to play hide and seek with the passengers as government watches helplessly. The condition of Batote-Kishtwar stretch of National Highway has deteriorated further at Khilani some 8 KM from Doda has slipped approximately 8 feet created panic among the government circles. While talking to Early Times, Deputy Inspector General of Police Traffic Ashkoor Ahmed Wani confirmed that the road was slippery. He said the matter has been takene up with the concerned. He said that situation could worsen as there is more prediction of rainfall in the area in next few days. He said that traffic police cleared at least 2000 trucks and 700 light vehicles stranded at Banihal and Qaziqund area. He said that in case the weather permits, the National Highway will remain open for vehicular movement. He said that due to landslide at several places, traffic on Batote-Kishtwar National Highway was not allowed. Meanwhile there are reports of landslides and road skidding at 8 place all along Batote-Kishtwar stretch of National Highway and the worst condition of the road is between Drabshala to Kishtwar and Doda-Batote including areas at Khorapani, Raggi Nallah, Shalimar, Malori and other places. The internal road links in Doda and Kishtwar District are also close and Bhaderwah-Doda road is also facing a threat of collapse as the reports of road sinking at many places are traveling thick and fast. Thatri-Bhunzwah road is also blocked at many places since last several days as the concern department fails to meet out the requirement of man and machinery to clear the debris from the roads. The people blamed poor and sub standard work executed by GREF as main cause of frequent landslides and slipping of road all along Batote-Kishtwar National Highway. Several houses were also damaged due to rains in Doda and Kishtwar District. Agriculture land as well as orchids also suffered massive damages. When contacted Minister for R&B Sunil Sharma said that R&B department put around 18 machines at various vulnerable spots on Batote-Kishtwar Highway to clear the slides. He said that due to continuous rainfall in the area, the road clearance was badly hampered, added that all efforts are being made to clear the National Highways. He said that both DC Doda and DC Kishtwar have been instructed to monitor the road clearance and submitted the progress report after every hour or two. He said Superintending Engineer R&B Doda has also been directed to visit the vulnerable spots and put all men and machinery in service to clear the roads. He said that teams had been constituted for each vulnerable spot, added that situation is being monitored closely. He said that after reports of road slip at Khilani, the concerned officials have been asked to personally visit the spot and are advised to suggest the preventive measures need to be taken for preventing further sliding of road. He said that bad weather is creating hurdles in restoration of roads, added that vehicles loaded with essential commodities are being cleared on priority bases. He said that similar steps had been taken for Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. He said that all the Deputy Commissioners and officers of concerned departments have been asked to keep monitoring the traffic clearance, particularly the stranded passengers. He said that special directions has been issued to government officials to help the stranded people in every possible way and also facilitate their safe journey. |
