After losing power NC, Cong leaders visit flood prone areas Omar forgets chopper walks on foot, carries umbrella to impress people | | | Fazal Khan Early Times Report Srinagar, Apr 2: National Conference and Congress leaders are touring various areas across the Valley to assess the flood situation and are assuring people of all the possible help. After visiting these areas they are promptly issuing press notes and photographs to "highlight" their concern about the people. On Wednesday the NC working president and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited the Beerwah area in central Kashmir to assess the situation arising due to the prevailing flood threat and in the evening NC media cell issued the photographs of Omar carrying an umbrella and moving around on foot to assess the situation. On the other hand Congress leaders led by new chief of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Ghulam Ahmed Mir along with other senior leaders of the party visited low lying areas in the Srinagar city and assured them that party is with them. NC and Congress leaders making their presence felt amidst flood threat has surprised people. "Are these the same men who left us in lurch in September 2014 when flood waters seeped into our homes?" asks a common man. Soon after the floods hit Kashmir in 2014 all the ministers of ruling coalition comprising NC and Congress disappeared from the scene and left the people to fend for themselves. Dismal performance of the NC-Congress government during floods had evoked widespread criticism from the people and both the parties had to face the wrath of the voters in the 2014 assembly polls. An analyst while talking to Early Times said: "When floods inundated Kashmir in 2014, the senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said Rs 75000/ as compensation is not acceptable and he would fight tooth and nail to ensure that flood victims get Rs five lakhs as compensation. He had even promised to people that he would take up the issue of appropriate compensation for flood victims in the Parliament." He said since the day Congress lost the elections in Jammu and Kashmir it went into hibernation and forgot about the miseries of the flood victims, as the party leaders are still mourning the loss of power. "Now the new JKPCC Chief G A Mir is trying to rebuild the image of his party by touring the areas which are considered to be unsafe. When these people were in government and could have done a lot for the masses that time they preferred to save themselves and their families from the flood fury," he added. The analyst said that Ghulam Nabi Azad went on record to say that JK politicians and bureaucrats deserted the people when they needed them the most. "Congress leaders now trying to act as Messiahs of people is not going to impress anyone," he added. The former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during 2014 deluge used to be active on twitter and could be seen carrying out aerial surveys of the areas which were under water. He did not bother to walk on foot and carry an umbrella to reach out to people. He just waved marooned people from the sky and appeared on TV channels to tell them that government is helpless and can't do anything. After losing power Omar Abdullah seems to have realized that he cannot always fly in the sky and can't hide behind the excuses. Now he is trying to find ways and means to ensure that NC remains relevant and intact during next six years. |
