Gulmarg, other heights receive fresh snowfall, rains lash plains in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 3 : The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and other upper reaches received fresh snowfall while plains were lashed by heavy rains in the Kashmir valley, where there is no flood threat as the water level in river Jehlum was still belaow danger mark. Meteorological Department Director Sonam Lotus said the weather will improve from today and will remain mainly dry during the next five days though there could be isolated light rain or thundershowers. A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that there could be light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places over the Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg experienced about half a feet fresh snowfall since early this morning, a hotel owner said over phone. He said upper reaches, including Affarwat, the highest skiing point connected through Cable Car, Kongdori and Khilanmarg received moderate to heavy snowfall since last night. The spokesman also said that the minimum temperature at the ski resort was minus 1 degree which is being considered normal during this time of the season. The upper heights in the north Kashmir, including the areas near the Line of Control (LoC), also received fresh snowfall. However, the plains in the north Kashmir received moderate to heavy rain during the past 24 hours. Fresh snowfall was also recorded at tourist resort of Sonmarg on Srinagar-Leh national highway, which is closed since December last year. Report of fresh snowfall was received from Baltal, base camp of holy Amarnath shrine in the central Kashmir district of Ganderbal. There was also snowfall at Amarnath cave and its periphery, Sheshnag, Mahaguns, Pisso top, Panjterni and Chandanwari, the last motorable halting station on traditional yatra route. Pahalgam however, received 26.8 mm rainfall during the past 12 hours. The minimum temperature at famed health resort was 2.4 degree, which was more than a notch above normal. Mughal road, connecting the south Kashmir with Jammu region, also received fresh snowfall. The road is closed for the past three months. Srinagar, where a number of localities and roads remained water logged, received 13.5 mm rainfall during the night resulting in drop in the minimum temperature. As against yesterdays 5.6 degree C it was 5.2 degree Celsius, a notch below normal today. The Spokesman further said at Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the minimum temperature was 6.3 degree while at Kokernag it was 5.2 degree. However, at Kupwara it was 5.5 degree after 26.9 mm rainfall recorded till this morning. Kargil, a border town was the only place in the region where the minimum temperature was again sub zero.As against yesterdays 1.9 degree C, the minimum temperature dropped again and settled at minus 1.2 degree while at Leh it was 4.3 degree against yesterdays 3 degree, the spokesman added. |
