7 feared dead, several shifted to safer places in Doda, Kishtwar after rain havoc | Kishtwar-Batote NH collapsed, sinking at many places | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 3: In a tragic incident, seven family members are feared to be dead after house of Satish Kumar son of Jodh Ram resident of Dewalkund Dessa in Doda District collapsed due to heavy rains in the region. As per SSP Doda Zahid Manhas, police and army have launched a rescue operation, but only two dead bodies have been recovered so far. He said, "Satish Kumar along with his wife, four children and his brother-in-law were inside the house when it collapsed." He said that until and unless the operation ended and dead bodies recovered, the exert number of the dead could not be ascertained. He said that as soon as the incident took place, army and police launched a major rescue operation with the help of locals to find the survivals from the debris of the collapsed house, but added that after several hour long operation, no one could be retrieved alive. He said that the operation will remain continue till situation allowed as the area adjacent to the site is also sinking. "We will continue the rescue operation till feel safe---in case operation will be abandon for late night, the same will be started early morning" said SSP Doda. The locals informed the "Early Times" that the chances of survival is very low and identified the those feared dead as 36 year old Satish Kumar, his 30 year old wife Sushma Devi, Nitin Singh (12 yrs), Anjana Devi (8 yrs), Vindu (3 yrs) and Ravni (1 yrs) all children's of Satish Kumar and his brother in law Suresh Kumar (16 yrs) was also among the feared dead. Several houses were also damaged in many parts of Doda and Kishtwar Districts. In Dool area of Kishtwar, the houses of Mohammad Din Ahanger, Ghulam Hussain and Ghulam Haider Ahanger were collapsed and their families were shifted to nearby Dool-Hasti project quarters. The lone bridge over river Chenab connecting Pullar, Cherji and adjoining areas having population of over 3000 also collapsed due to heavy rains. The local people informed the "Early Times" that the hill lock in Pullar area is also skidding, threatening the populated areas, added that there is immediate need of shifting of some families from the area to nearby Padyarna Tehsil Headquarter. Similar reports of house collapsed were received from many areas of both the District. The administration of Doda and Kishtwar District also fail to come to the rescue of people as both the administrations lacks facilities and equipments to tackle such situations, beside the nature furry is such heavy that no government or administration could manage the things till weather improves. Meanwhile Kishtwar-Batote National Highway collapsed at several places, beside the road shows sign of sinking at many places as a result of which the threat of permanent disconnectivity looms large in the area having population of more than 7 lacs. The eyewitnesses said that the road has turned into a death trap and can invite trouble any time, added that it was unfit for traveling of heavy vehicles. A junior Engineer of R&B Department was also injured today while monitoring road restoration work near Khilani Doad. He was shifted to District Hospital Doda where doctors termed his condition as stable. It is pertinent to mention that the experts believe that due to non concreting of river Chenab banks before closing the doors of 450 MW Baglihar dam, the water of the reservoir was absorbed by the river beds which is causing major damage to the National Highway and disturb the geological strata of the area. |
