Jammu, Apr 3: At a time when Minister for Health and Medical Education is conducting surprise checks at the peripheral health units and issuing instructions to the officers to act against any delinquency in duty on part of doctors, there are many within the Government Medical College Jammu, who have been wearing their political allegiance on their sleeve to shun their professional responsibilities.
Sources disclose that many doctors and paramedical staff have been fudging the system to shun their professional responsibility, at the cost of lives of patients by intimidating the administration with their access to the politically affluent. "A doctor in the department of cardiology has been brazenly shunning his assigned duties in the hospital and putting precious lives of patients at risk, yet he has escaped any action because he flaunts his affiliation to the politicians" said a source in the GMCH. "He can be seen hobnobbing with the politicians and their relatives in an obvious bid to escape any action against him for his open dissent in discharge of his professional duties" he added. Sources also maintained that while the doctor in question maintains four private clinics in the city, he is rarely seen in the hospital, violating not only the service rules, but also professional ethics.
A staffer in the department of Cardiology when contacted to verify the reports divulged while confirming the unethical conduct of the said doctor that his very selection in the DM course in the SKIMS had caused quite a flutter and the issue of illegality in his selection was even raised in the state LA. "Not just that, even Public Service Commission had recommended to the government to revert him after he was promoted as Assistant professor, just three years after being appointed as B-Grade specialist , questioning his eligibility" he averred. "He comes with frivolous excuses to dodge his duties and is on an unabated slander campaign against his own department" he added further. However, when contacted, HoD Cardiology Dr. Sushil Sharma refused a comment.
ET meanwhile learnt that this doctor in Cardiology is not an isolated case and there are several others who have been hiding behind their political connections to eschew their professional duties, risking lives of their patients in the process. "While administration has rightfully transferred many who had been overstaying for long on convenient postings owing to their political connections, these black sheep amongst the doctors and para medical staff who are bringing defame to the profession also need to identified and fixed" said a former medical superintendent of the GMCH.
