Rains, dilapidated roads make commuters vulnerable to hazards

Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 3: Be it official apathy or the heavy rains causing further damages to city roads but dilapidated city roads in winter capital of state are making commuters especially the drivers of two wheelers prone to road accidents.
The pot holed city roads particularly with water logging due to rains are showing their ugly faces taking toll of vehicles which are suffering damages while some drivers often are having arguments with passersby who often get their clothes dirty by the splashing of mud water.
While the city roads are presenting a shabby look to the lakhs of pilgrims visiting to cave shrine of Shri Vaihsnio Devi s in Katra the concerned departments be it Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department or the municipal authorities all have adopted a Nelsons' eye approach towards this issue of the common masses in city. The Road and Building Department apparently has not undertaken any major repair of the damaged stretches but only managed patching only in the winter capital.
Due to the laying of sewerage pipes the project undertaken by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) and ERA jointly the city roads were completely turned across the winter capital. One such road is near City Square Mall where the road is laid with sewerage pipes. Potholes soon started developing around the manholes after the NBCC laid pipes. The stagnated water in potholes on the major roads in the city is posing threat to pedestrians and vehicles and leading to fatal accidents. The concerned department is watching the whole situation like a 'mute spectator' and yet has not undertaken any repair work reasons better known to the concerned at the helms of affairs.
Earlier, the NBCC used to fund for the repair work but now as they have withdrawn their works now they don't pay enough attention towards this menace while the R&B and Municipal authorities too have adopted a callous approach. Suresh Dogra, employed in banking sector briefly lamented that not a single road in the city is left without the potholes in the city and the shabby roads are taking toll of vehicles' health and the cost of maintenanceof our vehicles. "We are paying road tax against our vehicles yet the Government has failed to provide better roads for our vehicles, if such is the condition of city roads in capital town, what one expects from government t in peripheral localities and others districts," he added. Another commuter Kunal Khajuria said, "Some commuters who are chronic sufferer of any orthopedic problem are getting its further worsened due to driving on bumpy roads." Infact the bad shapes of roads are putting at stake the lives of the citizens of the city, "he added.
An owner of an auto garage in old city, on anonymity said that vehicles with wheel alignment, shocker problems and dents have gone up by 40 percent during last two months. "Most of the four-wheeler drivers fail to judge the depth of pothole due to water stagnation and the vehicles get various problems related to shockers and suspensions during the rainy days"
