PM Modi becoming unpopular by the day | Mood of the nation | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 3: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who surprised the whole world in 2014 by bringing the BJP-led NDA back to power at the centre, is losing his popularity at a rapid pace. The BJP under his leadership had won 282 seats in the general elections and the BJP's allies had also improved their tally and won 56 seats. The BJP and its allies shared between them 336 seats in the 543-member House. It was after more than two decades that the country gave a clear mandate to any of the formations. No one had expected that PM Modi would lose his sheen and appeal so soon and that the BJP would suffer a massive defeat in the Delhi assembly elections, despite the PM's intense campaigning. The BJP could win only 3 seats in the 70-member assembly. The remaining 67 seats were won by the Aam aadmi Party (AAP) of Arvind Kejriwal whom PM Modi had ridiculed by calling him AK-49. The defeat the BJP suffered in the Delhi elections was the first indication that PM Modi had lost the people's confidence. The defeat put the PM and the BJP on back foot with the people across the country holding his political and economic policies responsible for the massive victory of the AAP in Delhi where the electorate represents the national mood. The findings of opinion poll which leading news channel Aaj Tak broadcasted at the prime time on Thursday further established that PM Modi has lost much of his charisma. The survey was conducted by India Today Group and Cicero in 19 states between March 1 and 14. The survey teams covered 19 states, 250 assembly segments and 519 polling stations. The survey teams interviewed 12161 eligible voters. The opinion poll said that only 36 per cent of those who were interviewed by the survey teams voted for PM Modi and as many as 64 per cent against him. Before the 2014 lok Sabha polls, 50 per cent of the voters who had been interviewed by the survey teams engaged by India Today Group-Cicero had voted for PM Modi. That PM Modi's popularity came down by 14 per cent in just 10 months must be a cause of worry for him and those who manage the affairs of the party. PM Modi and his men need to examine the causes which have been responsible for the steep decline in his popularity as well as the popularity of the BJP. According to the opinion poll, if elections are held today, the BJP would win only 255 seats, 27 less than its 2014 tally. If this trend continues during the remaining period, the BJP would suffer the worst ever defeat; it might not win even hundred seats. The findings of the survey appear correct when viewed in the light of the state of the party's affairs in Jammu and Kashmir. In Jammu and Kashmir, the "bulk of its constituency has", according to insiders and serious BJP-waters, "practically abandoned the BJP", saying that "it is not only bartering the interests of Jammu region to keep the separatist and communal forces in Kashmir in good humour but also the paramount national interests by recognizing Pakistan as a stakeholder even in this part of Jammu and Kashmir". |
