Srinagar, Apr 5: Though there was now no flood threat as water level in the river Jhelum and its tributaries was much below the danger mark, soil erosion and landslides remained a cause of concern in the Kashmir valley, where 18 people have already lost their lives due to mudslides and shooting stones. Several thousand families were evacuated from the areas which have witnessed soil erosion and mud and landslides in the valley during the past one week following heavy rain. However, the water level has been witnessing considerable decrease as the weather remained dry during the past two days, an official of Irrigation and Food Control (IFC) said here today. He said at 1100 hrs, the water level at Sangam was 11.30 feet, about 11 feet below danger mark. It was 11.50 feet at 0900 hrs. At Ram Munshi Bagh, the water level has also witnessed drop. Against 14.80 feet recorded at 0900 hrs, it was 14.75 feet at 1100 hrs, more than three feet below danger mark. They said at Asham, in Bandipora, the water level was 11.50 feet at 1100 hrs against 11.58 feet at 0900 hrs, over two feet below danger mark. |
