SRINAGAR, Apr 5: At a time when the state government has claimed that it has provided relief to the people affected by recent flood like situation residents of Mir Behri locality in the interior of Dal Lake are up in arms alleging that they have been ditched by the present coalition government.
Sharing their views, the residents averred that the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed led coalition government is no different from the previous National Conference-Congress coalition government headed by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. The residents said that the present dispensation has shown no concern towards their problems. "The recent flood like situation have put the last nail in the coffin of devastation of the area. As the area was recovering from the catastrophic floods of the last year all sources of livelihood have been completely destroyed due to recent deluge like situation. Activities comprising of vegetable cultivation, fishing, production of Nadru (Lotus root) cattle and tourism have come to a grinding halt," said the residents.
Firdous Ahmad Akhoon, Vice President, Mir Behri Welfare Society (MWS) said that there was a hope in the minds of people that 2015 will erase all distressful memories of floods of September 2014, but just after a period of seven months same horrific situation was repeated.
Akhoon said that Mir Behri area was always given a step motherly treatment by all successive governments. He said the people were hopeful that the new government would fulfill their genuine basic demands and the area would be brought at par with other developed sections of society.
"Ninety percent population is dependent on cultivation and other sources of employment from the Dal Lake. Local people had hardly saved some seeds in the last year's flood, but those were completely destroyed because they had been sown in the month of March," said Inayat Hussain, a resident.
The residents said that 40 percent structures had been completely destroyed and rest partially damaged in the last year's devastating floods. They said the recent flood like situation has led to further damages to the structures. The residents demanded that new survey should be done to compensate the loss of their livelihood sources, cattle, live stock and other property damages.
