Early Times Report

Srinagar, Apr 5: The water level, which was above danger mark, has started receding in the world famous Dal Lake after one more gate was thrown open to the river Jhelum, today.''Main outflow of the Lake was opened today following drop in the water level in Jhelum, ''officials said, adding that earlier, the water level in the river was above the level of Dal Lake and there was threat that river water will enter the lake. ''Now the water level in river is down and we have opened the main outflow of the Lake at Gaw Kadal which will result in decrease in the water level in the lake which was above danger mark due to recent rain,'' they added. They said though there is no flood threat, people in the Lake were advised take precautionary measures to meet any crisis. Situation was being monitored round the clock and close watch was being maintained on water level in the Lake. However, the gate of Nallah AmirKhan was opened to drain out the water from the Lake.
Floating vegetable and flower gardens suffered major damage due to increase in the water level. However, people living on the bank of the Lake had already removed their belongings from ground and first floor. Houseboat owners and 'shikara walas' have also taken precautionary measure to meet any challenge in the event of flood. Shopkeepers on Boulvard road, Khayam, Bishambar Nagar, Nowpora, Munwar, Miskeen Bagh and Kohnakhan have started removing their products to safer places.
