Flood fears diminish in Kashmir valley
4/6/2015 12:18:38 AM
Early Times Report

srinagar, Apr 5: Water level in the Jhelum river reduced below the alert mark at all three measuring places in the Kashmir Valley for the first time in a week, further allaying the fears of flooding.
At Sangam in south Kashmir, the Jhelum river was flowing at 10 feet while at Ram Munshi Bagh in the city the level had fallen to 14.40 feet at 7.00 PM today, an official of the Flood Control department said.
He said the water-level in the river at Asham in north Kashmir Bandipora district was around 11 feet.
"At all the three measuring places, the water-level in the river has dropped below the alert mark. As the weather has improved, the flood threat has also eased with it," the official said.
Heavy rainfall last week across the Valley had caused sudden surge in the water-level of rivers and streams, leading water logging in many areas while few areas were flooded due to breaches in the embankments.
The rainfall led to landslides at many places across the state, resulting in death of 30 persons -- 18 in Kashmir, eight in Jammu region and four soldiers in Ladakh region.
While some schools opened on Friday, regular class work in all schools across the Valley is expected to start tomorrow.
The weekly flea market, known as Sunday Market in local parlance, witnessed brisk business today after remaining closed for past two Sundays due to weather.
