Agri Department to conduct survey of damages to crops

Jammu, Apr 5: To assess the loss of crops in Jammu region due to ongoing rains and hail storm, the Agriculture Department has started survey of losses in entire Jammu region.
The direction to the officers and employees of the Department were issued by Director Agriculture, Jammu Dr D S Jamwal during his visit to various rain hit areas of Jammu to take the stock of situation caused due to heavy rains and hailstorm.
Dr Jamwal who conducted an extensive tour of RS Pura villages interacted with farmers panchs and sarpanchs there and assured them full support from the Government.
Admitting that heavy damage has been caused to crops in entire Jammu region due to rains and hail storm, Jamwal said that at various places the standing crops are under 1.5 to two feet deep water. He said extensive damage to the potato fields was also noticed with poor tuber formation where water is stagnating for last many days. There was complete loss in the entire watermelon and cucurbit crop growing in the Badyal belt along with many other vegetables. He assured the farmers that detailed report of crop damages is prepared with immediate effect. He said the damage has been caused to crops due to flood waters of nullahs, river Tawi and Chenab. The Director during his tour took the stock of damages caused to wheat, mustard, Barseem and Vegetable crop due to prolonged stagnation of rain water in the fields, lodging of crops and further anticipated damage to the roots of crops as the weather gets clear and temperature soars up. It may be recalled that crops all over jammu region have been damaged totally due to rains and hail storm and the damage will be to the extent of hundreds crores of rupees. Farmers have resorted to protest in different parts of Jammu including Kathua, Samba, R S Pura, Pargwal and Akhnnor with farmers demanding immediate compensation.
