Yet another farmer succumbs to pressure of repaying his loans | | | Early Times Report
Kathua, Apr.13: 47 yrs old Tara Chand today died at village Chapki Kurd, in Hiranagar allegedly due to persistent pressure by his bank to reimburse bank loan which he was unable to repay due to damage to crops in recent rains/ hailstorms. Tara Chand left behind 4 children and his wife who are completely dependent on agriculture. 80% of his crops had damaged in September 2014 flood and whole Kharif Crop in recent rains , pushing him in deep debt and depression which ultimately manifested in fatal cardiac arrest. Santosh, wife of the deceased said that the her husband scrounged loan under Kissan Credit Card, KCC, 4 years ago but due to consecutive damages to crops, he could not reimburse the loan. She alleged that he was under deep depression due pressure of the Bank. Gulshan Kumar, son of the deceased disclosed that his father had no other source of income than and due to damage to crops, his father had no money even to pay their school fees and it was hard for family to survive. Ashok Kumar, a neighbor, disclosed that the deceased had borrowed Rs 30 thousand loans from a bank under KCC and could not repay back due to damage of crops. He informed that Swarn Manhas a farmer of same village and Rattan Lal of Jagat Pur Kathua also died of depression. Shiv Dev Singh, State President of National Farmers' Forum alleged that banks were harassing poor farmers even when the government has acknowledged complete damage to the crops. "Where do the banks expect the farmer to repay his loan from?" he questioned, demanding immediate compensation for the farmers so that their families could sustain themselves. |
