Concerned over environmental vulnerability, Doda observes complete bandh

Jammu, Apr 13: The Doda town and its adjoining areas today observed a complete shutdown on the call given by the Bar Association Doda to protest the dilapidated condition of 110 KM Batote-Doda-Kishtwar National Highway which has become vulnerable to landslides, sinking of road stretches and shooting stones.
The anger also brewed amongst the locals beside due to vulnerability of Baglihar Power Project as the project management fails to take preventive measures before closing the gates of the reservoir for which according to the sources, nearly an amount of Rs. 400 Crore was kept in the Detailed Project Report to deal with pre as well as post environmental hazards.
As per the details available with "Early Times", on the call given by Bar Association, Doda and supported by various organizations including All India Students Federation, Doda Development Front, Private School association, Contractors association, chemists & Druggists Association and other organization, , all the educational institution, Courts & business houses remains closed and public Transport also remained off road. The main protest was held outside the office of Deputy Commissioner Doda where the speakers expressed their anguish over the issues of continuous danger, threat and insecurity faced by the people of entire region due to foreseeable sinking of some villages along the river Chenab and lack of safe and all weather road connectivity to twin Districts of Doda and Kishtwar having population of nearly 7 lakh.
While talking to "Early Times" many people demanded a CBI probe into an allegation of alleged use of Substandard Material in construction work by the GREF . "We cannot blame R&B who got the possession of the road only few months ago--- it is GREF organization that used substandard material in construction of road as a result of which the condition of the road is posing a great threat to the area" said Ajay Kumar. He said that the government should not allow the GREF to go scot free and must conduct the probe into the allegations leveled by the people.
Meanwhile the people questioned the role of construction agency involved in the construction of 450 MW state owned Baghliar Power Project. They alleged that an amount of approximately Rs. 400 Crore kept for various welfare measures including plantation of trees, concreting vulnerable areas alongside the bank of river Chenab has been embezzled as no such activities was carried out in the area , confronting project living around project area with many untold miseries. The people urged upon the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Syed to constitute an inquiry committee to probe the embezzlement of funds meant for the environmental and welfare activities of the area.
