MoS Home visited Kashmir only to aggravate situation | 'BJP endangering national security'? | | Early Times Report Jammu, April 13: Union Minister of State (MoS) for Home, Kiren Rijju was in Srinagar for two days. The general impression in the state was that he had come to review the prevailing security scenario in the state in general and militant and separatist-infested Kashmir Valley in particular. Those who held this view proved totally wrong, as Kiran Rijju made not one but many avoidable statements which disheartened the nationalist constituency in the state and strengthened those working against the return of Kashmiri Pandits to the Valley and demanding demilitarization of the state. On April 10, Rijju contradicted his boss Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh by saying that the Government of India had not taken any decision on the return of Kashmiri Pandits and asserted that the talks on the issue were still on. Rajnath Singh had a couple of days before made a categorical statement that he had discussed the whole issue with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and it was decided during the meeting that the state government earmark or acquire land within the Valley for the resettlement of Kashmiri Pandits. Rijju embarrassed and contradicted his boss at a time when the separatists were opposing the reported decision and terming it as a conspiracy to set-up Israel-type settlements in the Valley and the Chief Minister had also informed the Assembly that his government was opposed to the creation of Israel-type colonies for the internally-displaced Kashmiri Pandits. His statement that the Government of India had not taken any decision on the issue obviously created confusion in the minds of the community concerned and emboldened the separatists to create troubles in the Valley by holding protest demonstrations and asking the people to observe bandh on Saturday, which they did out of fear or out of conviction. Not content with what Rijju said on April 10, he made another controversial statement the very next day, which again shocked the people of the state and pleased the separatists and other forces in the Valley who had been demanding demilitarization of the state. He said: "if the state government sends a proposal for demilitarization of particular areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Government of India (GoI) would look into it and decide accordingly. Jammu and Kashmir has an elected government and if the government sends a proposal for demilitarization of certain areas, GoI would look into it," he said. The question is did Rijju made this highly controversial statement on his own or at the behest of someone else in the Union Government? Whether he made this statement on his own or at the behest of someone else, he did disservice to the nation and strengthened the anti-national forces in the Valley. It appears something serious is cooking up in New Delhi. It, according to serious Jammu and Kashmir-watchers, is "endangering national security". |
