Non-insured traders keep fingers crossed as Govt yet to finalize process of rehabilitation | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report srinagar, Apr 13: Despite the announcement of chief minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed that compensation to the non-insured traders affected by the devastating flood of September 2014 would start from April 15; the affected people are keeping their fingers crossed over the government plan of rehabilitation. A group of affected traders while sharing their views with Early Times said the government has not mentioned about the amount to be paid to them. These people said that things should have been made clear in advance by the people at helm so that they could have framed a proper plan before starting a fresh innings. "We believe the words of chief minister, but at the same time we want him to be generous towards the traders who had not insured their stocks. Since the flood wrecked havoc with our business it is the responsibility of the state government to compensate us in an appropriate manner," said Mohammad Yousuf, a petty shopkeeper. The non-insured traders allege that they have been left to the mercy of the God by the government and by the people who claim to be their representatives. They said that while as the insured businessmen got every penny for their losses the non-insured traders are yet to receive even a single penny. "The past seven months have been very testing for us and it has become difficult for us to fulfill our daily obligations towards our family. The present dispensation has announced that we will be compensated, but the final picture is not clear as yet. We need to be compensated and that too at the earliest so that we start afresh," said Mehraj-ud-din, a non-insured trader. It would be in place to mention here that Mufti had some days back said that the non-insured traders would be compensated by the government. The chief minister had also said that this process would start from April 15. He however, did not spell out the process of the rehabilitation and as such the mystery about the same continues. "The state government should ideally compensate the affected non-insured traders to the full. This can be done phase wise, but the important thing is that government should come forward whole heartedly. As the summer season has set in the affected traders want to restart their business and this is impossible without the support of the state government," said Shakeel Ahmad, an affected trader. The affected traders are relying upon the wisdom of Finance Minister, Dr. Haseeb Drabu who in his budget speech had said that state government would take every step to help the people who suffered immense losses due to the devastating flood. With just a day left for the process of rehabilitation to start, the non-insured affected traders are quite upbeat hoping that better things are in store for them. |
