Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 14: Seven years after the college was sanctioned, work on Government Degree College (GDC) Bani is yet to take off, thanks to the Higher Education department. A source in the department informed Early Times that former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had twice announced to lay down the foundation stone of GDC building, but his visit to Bani never materialised. "The government had claimed that bad weather prompted Omar to cancel the visit. However, the truth is that no contractor had come forward to undertake the construction," the source said. "Despite allocation of Rs. 11.67 crore for the construction of college building, the Higher Education department hasn't' displayed any seriousness to start the work," he said. He said the department had initially hired the Public Works Development and later Projects Construction Corporation but both of them refused to undertake construction of college building. "Now the department has alloted the construction work to Jammu Kashmir Housing Board, but the work is yet to start," he said, adding that in absence of classes, the college is functioning high secondary school building, causing huge inconvenience for faculty and students. When contacted, Principal GDC, Bani, N K Gupta said that land for the college has been identified and construction work would be started soon. Director Colleges, T A Kawoos, also said that land has been identified, but was unaware about the company which has been allotted the work. |
