7 yrs on, Parmpilla bridge probe still awaited | | | S.Tahir-Ul Haq Early Times Report
BARAMULLA, Apr 14: Seven years on, the findings of the probe ordered into the collapse of Parmpilla Uri Bridge here in Baramulla district of north Kashmir have not been made public. Sources told Early Times that, "The Parmpilla Bridge was constructed by the NHPC when it collapsed during a load testing in November 2008 resulting in death of 22 persons mostly labourers who were washed away in river Jhelum. Though the then Governor had directed the district authorities to complete the probe within a week, however, the probe report has not been made public yet. "We don't know what happened to the probe. Around 22 people were killed due to the negligence of the NHPC, sources said. However sources said that, a Chandigarh-based company, 'Sham Lal Gupta and brothers', had bagged the contract for the bridge construction. The police had registered a case against the company under section 304 a negligence and 167 death caused without intention. People of Sikh community from Baramulla town, while sharing their views with early Times said that, the probe committee had earlier sent some samples to the Crime Branch and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) New Delhi to ascertain the quality of the material. Whereas fact of the matter is Baramulla District is having a population of Sikh religion not less than 33 thousand who visits all Gurduwaras of Baramulla district except Chhenvi Patshahi Gurduwara, which is not having a proper connectivity because of this bridge. "The irresponsible and callous attitude of the NHPC authorities can be judged from the fact that despite the tragedy of high magnitude, they didn't bother to complete construction of the bridge, leaving the local residents in distress," they said. The bridge was designed to connect dozens of villages across the river Jhelum with the Laghama village of Uri. Unfortunately the probe didn't proceed further. Government has failed to make the NHPC officials accountable. They further added and said that, Uri's reputation as a confluence of religion is further strengthened by the Chhenvi Patshahi Gurudwara of Guru Hargobind Sahib the sixth Guru of Sikhs. It is interesting to note, that the Gurudwara is co-located with the Ziarat of Panch Pir at Paran Pilan.Uri has etched a place for itself in post-independence military history. Meanwhile Baisakhi festival was celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm and gaiety. Sikh community across the north Kashmir celebrated the festival with religious fervour on Tuesday to observe the 316th year of the foundation of Khalsa Panth by 10 sikh Guru,Guru Gobind Singh. On this auspicious occasion people from all walks of life greeted Sikh people and prayed for the peace and prosperity, non violence and mutual understanding between various communities so that everlasting happiness will return to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. |
