Floods force JK to import additional food grains | | |
Jammu, Apr 14: Untimely rain and flash floods have left the state with no option but to import additional food grains to meet the local demand. Official sources said that while the September flash floods had affected the Kharif crop production, the recent heavy rains besides hail storms had affected the rabi crop. They said that already there has been 20 to 25 per cent loss to the rice production in the Kashmir valley and the as a result of recent heavy rain wheat production may fall by 25 to 30 per cent in the state, especially in the Jammu region. They added that over five lakh metric tons of rice were being the annual production of the state and that of wheat 4.45 lakh metric tons. Despite this the state had to bank on heavy imports of wheat and rice, especially for several lakh people in the twin capital cities and in major towns. Senior Government functionaries opine that even if the recent rain has hit 25 to 30 per cent wheat crop it would mean the total production may not be more than 3.50 lakh to 3.75 lakh metric tons. And if in the previous Kharif crop the flash floods affected 20 per cent paddy crops it may mean that the last year total rice production could have not crossed 3.75 lakh metric tons. These functionaries said that apart from price escalation in rice and wheat prices the state of Jammu and Kashmir has to seek help from the Government of India for securing added import of food-grains, especially wheat and rice. |
