Police ask politicians to inform SPs before moving out | Militants are still around, cautions DGP | | Fazal Khan Early Times Report Srinagar, May 9: Security agencies have reportedly asked the politicians in Kashmir to seek clearance from the concerned Superintendents of Police before visiting any of the areas as there are apprehensions about militants intensifying their activities to make their presence felt, sources told Early Times on Saturday. They said with the shifting of Durbar to Srinagar, security agencies are on toes and are ensuring that newly elected legislators move around freely without any fear. "Gunmen killing an employee of the Health Department at Zakura in city outskirts last week and grenade attack in south Kashmir's Shopian area on Saturday indicate that militants are making attempts to shatter the prevailing peace," sources added. The Director General of Police K Rajendra while talking to Early Times said, "District SPs have been directed to ensure that politicians move around freely and they should not feel any threat perception." He said, "They (politicians) are generally sanitized. They are elected representatives and they have to move around they cannot remain confined to their office chambers or homes." Asked whether politicians have been requested to inform the concerned SPs, before moving around, the DGP said, "We have told them to keep the police informed about their programs to ensure that the areas they visit are sanitized. It's a routine practice and there is nothing unusual about it." The DGP Rajendra said, "Though the militancy is one decline but militants are still around. Politicians and other high profile dignitaries need to be careful." A top police official said that newly elected legislators are taking the things "lightly" but we are ensuring that they are made aware about the possible threat perceptions and the precautionary measures that need to be taken. "Militants are on the run and coordinated efforts of the security agencies have ensured that no untoward incident takes place," he said. The official said that with the melting of snow there are possibilities that infiltration attempts may increase and if the militants succeed to reach the towns they can do anything to make their presence felt on the ground. "Grenade attack in Shopian area in which at least 12 people were injured on Saturday cannot be brushed aside as a stray incident. We have to ensure that designs of militants to shatter peace are taken care off." A source said that besides "militant threat" security agencies have received the inputs that separatists are trying to regroup and are making desperate attempts to trigger stir in Kashmir to keep the pot boiling. "We have identified the elements who can orchestrate street protests and stone pelting. Police are keeping a vigil on them. The moment we feel that they can prove detrimental for peace they would be put behind the bars," said a top police officer. He said that soon after Durbar opened in Srinagar a few BJP legislators were unhappy as vehicles of their choice were not provided to them, and they tried giving up the security cover. "We had to make them understand that giving up security cover is a dangerous move and it can have far reaching consequences. We are making them aware about the security hassles and the prevailing situation." Pertinently, PHE Minister Sukhnandan Kumar had given up the security cover after being denied the brand new bullet proof Scorpio vehicle. Following Kumar's refusal police had to ask the policemen in civvies to guard him. |
