Rise in domestic violence irks civil society | JK fails on Beti Bachao as well | | S.Tahir-Ul Haq Early Times Report
BARAMULLA, May 9: The recent cases of domestic violence which claimed two lives has reflected the failure of the government in implementing the government of India's 'Beti Bachoa' scheme. J&K has been hogged by many social issues and one of these issues is Domestic Violence. Today a woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband in Tangdhar area of Kupwara district of North Kashmir. A senior police official told Early Times that, A 60 year-old woman Nazim Jan was brutally beaten and critically injured by her husband Ghulam Rasool Khan S/O Haba Khan in Nowpora Suliman village in Tangdar area of Kupwara district. The woman was shifted to Sheri Kashmir Institute of Medical Science Soura Srinagar (SKIMS) where she succumbed to her injuries, official said. However the cause behind the killing of woman was not known immediately, Police have registered a case in this regard and investigation has been taken up, official added. After completing all medico-legal formalities the body of deceased woman was handed over to her relatives for last rites. Early Times have learnt from sources that four women have died in Kashmir valley within the last one month due to alleged domestic violence meted out to them by their in-laws, signaling a macabre rise in domestic violence cases. Voices for freedom of expression for women in Kashmir are garnering support; deaths of women due to domestic abuse are going unnoticed. It is pertinent to mention here that on May 1, Monjila, W/O Manzoor Ahmad Wani of Chaplan Khankahi Moulla a Bengali woman was burnt alive by her husband in Srinagar district, Husband allegedly sprinkled kerosene oil on her and set her ablaze, after the incident mother-in-law of Monjila accepted that her son had drinking problems. However police had registered a case vide FIR no, 43/2015 under section 307/RPC in police station M.R.Gunj and investigations were taken up. The burning incident of wife in Srinagar was yet to heal up when another woman of five children was allegedly beaten to pulp and killed by her husband in Boniyar thesil of Baramulla district. Sheikh Masarat W/O Abdul Hamid Sheikh R/O Boniyar became the target and according to reports that she was always subjected to domestic violence from her husband Abdul Hamid Khan. A senior official from State Women's Commission said that the state government needs to give more teeth to the Domestic Violence Act which came into force in 2011 so that the crime perpetrators are dealt with sternly, the state government has done little to address the problem of women. Qurat-ul Ain Masoodi, who runs NGO AASH spoke to early times that, I have encountered with almost ten cases of domestic violence's. However she admitted that women are going through a struggle for survival and at the same time she added that these women must be helped by the government and other agencies. |
