Anantnag, May 10 : Threatening mass migration, scores of Kashmiri Pandits who returned back five years ago despite odds, Sunday held strong protest demonstrations against PDP-BJP government here at Veesu Qazigund.
Protesters accused government of turning a blind eye towards their problems and said that government apathy is forcing them to migrate to other parts of the country for the second time.
"The government has left us at the mercy of God. Before five years when we returned back we were promised adequate facilities but so for government did nothing for our welfare," they told Early Times. They said that after five years of stay successive governments failed in providing us additional residential quarters. "Three families are sharing a single quarter having three rooms
including a kitchen. Contractors swallowed large sums but government never paid any attention to our sufferings despite repeated pleas," they said.
Protesting residents said that colony was also lacking basic amenities including water. "Since last five years we are facing shortage of drinking water, our women folk is being forced to fetch water from a nearby nallah," said, a resident Sanjay Koul, adding faulty drainage system has made their lives miserably. Residents said that Food and supplies department has also deprived them of ration cards. "Despite repeated requests department has not
yet issued ration cards to us neither the department has opened up ration depot in the colony due to which we are buying rice, sugar from private stores," Vinod Koul, another resident said. They said that residents of the colony who are mostly government employees were without salaries from last over three months and were
facing difficult days. "Whenever we approach local administration here they simply direct us to contact Relief commissioner who is camped at Jammu. For a single signature are being forced to travel to Jammu," residents said.
Pandits advised state PDP-BJP government to stop befooling migrant pundits, "It is not the security situation that makes people migrate from one place to another. Economic and social welfare are also very important and these are the factors forcing the young Kashmiri Pandits
from the valley to look elsewhere," they said, urging Government to take immediate steps to ensure the non-migrant but internally displaced Kashmiri Pandits stay put, which will instill confidence among the migrants to return home. They sought Chief Minisiter Mufti Mohd Syed intervention and asked him to come clear on the issue. "If they want us to stay here then they must mitigate our problems otherwise we are ready to left Kashmir again," resident threatened.
