Will not succumb to political pressure during demolition drive along Jhelum banks: Mufti | Vows to provide relief to flood affected people | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 10: Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said that the state government would not succumb to any political pressure while carrying out demolition drive along the banks of river Jhelum. In an informal interaction with journalists over lunch here, Mufti said that demolishing the illegal structures along the water bodies has become important following the devastation caused by September 2014 flood. He said stern action under law would be taken against the violators so that flood like situation is not repeated. "We have decided to demolish all the illegal structures along the water bodies and there is no going back on this issue. No political pressure would be allowed and law will take its own course on this all important aspect. We stand by our commitment and people should not worry about this issue," chief minister said. Mufti while referring to the arrest of separatist leader Masarat Alam Bhat said that although government welcomes dissidence, but that should not be at the cost of overall security scenario. He said the separatist leader should not have raised slogans that could led to unrest not only in the state but across the country as well. "Certain things are acceptable, but at the same time there are certain positions that cannot be tolerated. Nobody should take law in his own hands since this would create trouble not only for that person but for the others as well. We are not happy to arrest anybody and we do this only in extreme cases," chief minister said. Referring to the PDP-BJP coalition government in the state, Mufti said that the dispensation has provided a great chance of uniting the state with the Indian union in real sense. He said it would be his endeavour to connect hearts of people living in the state with the hearts of people living in the other parts of country. The chief minister said that his government is committed to provide relief to the flood affected people so that the people restart their lives. He said that adequate compensation would be paid to the people who have lost their houses and livelihood due to the last year's devastating deluge. "The non-insured traders suffered heavily due to the flood and they need to be compensated for their losses. The government will not sit back and it would be ensured that these people are provided the necessary help. At the same time due compensation would be provided to the people whose houses suffered damages in the flood," said Mufti. Hinting towards the reopening of the cinema halls in Kashmir, the chief minister said that things are moving in the right direction vis-a-vis overall perception of people towards situation in Kashmir. He said that state government wants to provide a conducive atmosphere so that people come in good numbers to visit Kashmir. "It was sad that many tourist bookings were canceled in April due to flood like situation in the valley. However, the things have improved of late and it is our hope that this year's tourist season would be a great success. All the stake holders have to pitch in so that we reap benefits of a great tourist season," said Mufti. Referring to his recent visit and interaction with the Bollywood industry at Mumbai, the chief minister said that leading film directors promised him that they would come and shoot in Kashmir. He said that leading hotel chains of the country have promised to set up their hotels in Kashmir valley. Mufti said that the Information department would be strengthened with the induction of Mass Communication professionals. He said a policy would be framed with regard to the advertisements issued to the newspapers adding that circulation would play an important part in this regard. He asked the journalists to come out with concrete suggestions with respect to formation of Press Club in Srinagar. |
