23 killed, 35 injured as passenger bus plunges into gorge

JAMMU, May 11: Twenty three people were killed and 35 others sustained injuries on Monday when a passenger bus rolled down into deep gorge at Marothi in Udhampur district, some 100 km from main district headquarters. The critical injured were airlifted to Govt Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu for specialized treatment.
Police sources said that at least 23 people were killed while 35 others injured in a tragic road accident in Udhampur district of Jammu region.
"Soon having information, the senior police officers including Surinder Gupta, Deputy Inspector General of police (DIG) Udhampur-Reasi range, police teams from Chenani, Latti police stations and civil administration rushed to the accident site and with the help of locals started rescue and relief operation, they added.
Sources said the accident occurred when a passenger bus on the way from village Jakhed to Udhampur rolled down into a road side deep gorge at Maroti in Latti area this morning.
"Six injured were airlifted to the GMC Hospital Jammu for advance treatment while rest of the injured were being treated in Sub District Hospital (SDH) Chenani and District Hospital (DH) Udhampur., sources said.
Police sources said, "Around 58 people were travelling in the 44 seated bus when the incident took place.
Meanwhile a senior police officer adding to this said that bus got overloaded when some people who were holding protest against Health Department also boarded it. "The people were protesting against Health Department due to the shortage of doctors in the hospital at Dudu, he said.
"Some of the bodies of the deceased were later taken to the Chenani and Latti Police Station for identification. He said adding, that during identification it came to fore that 18 deceased hail from Latti, one each from Udhampur,Sudhmahadev and Mantalai."
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the bus accident in Jammu and Kashmir in which at least 23 passengers were killed.
"Disturbing news from J&K (Jammu and Kashmir). Bus accident in Udhampur has saddened me. My thoughts are with families of the deceased. Prayers with the injured," Modi uploaded on his micro blog.
"I have asked my ministerial colleague Dr Jitendra Singh to stay in touch with authorities & ensure timely assistance," he further tweeted.
