Jammu threatened by vehicular population explosion | | | Asif Iqbal Naik

Jammu, May 10 : An unprecedented explosion in vehicular population in Jammu District is posing a serious threat to over 16 lac people in multiple terms as government is facing a complete policy paralysis to control unchecked increase in vehicular population. There is approximately 227% increase in number of registered vehicles in Jammu District alone, while other nine Districts of Jammu province also witnessed 220% increase in number of registered vehicles in last five years as the total number of vehicles in these District increased from 55314 by end March 2010 to 121566 by ending March 2015. With the huge increase in number of registered vehicles in Jammu District, the winter capital of the state is all set to become the number one city of the world as far as density of vehicular population is concerned, by moving ahead of Tokyo city of Japan which is presently holding the number one spot. the District is all set to cross the 6 lac mark by the end of year 2015 as 30000-40000 new vehicles are added to the roads in Jammu District every year. According to the official figures, the registered vehicles in 10 Districts of Jammu Division by the end of March 2015 were 7,07,954 and out of which Jammu District has 5,86,388 registered vehicles followed by Udhampur District with 36,802, Samba 26,204, Rajouri 19,721, Poonch 17,101, Reasi 7,721, Doda 7,474, Kishtwar 3,391 and Ramban 3,152. Among 7, 07,954 registered vehicles in Jammu Division, nearly 65% vehicles are commercial vehicles including Busses and Mini busses. After Jammu District, Srinagar District is not too far as far as number of vehicle registration is concerned; it has approximately two lac registered vehicles. With the tremendous increase in the number of vehicles every year, the life of 15,26,406 (Population of Jammu District as per 2011 census) people of Jammu District has become the hell as there is one vehicle for every three person in the District which is quite high. The area of the Jammu District is 2,571 Sq. KM, thus for 1 Sq. KM area in Jammu, there are 228 vehicles. As per the official details, the road length in Jammu city is about 702.22 kms, thus the density of the vehicles by the end of March 2015 is 835 Vehicles per Kilometers which is likely to increase in coming days as the actual road length is also shrinking due to encroachment from the general public. The increase in number of vehicles also becomes the cause of health hazards for the people living in Jammu. With the number of vehicles increasing day by day in Jammu and Kashmir, the number of accidents also increased every year and as per the official details, 19553 accidents occurred from 2007 up to May 2010 (5864+5326+5945+2418) with injury to 27135 (7834+7579+8199+3523) during the same period with 3406 (950+950+1100+406) deaths. According to the doctors, the life of 70 to 80% deaths could have been prevented if the injured patients were shifted to nearby hospitals in time. While talking to "Early Times" Ashwani Khajuria Regional Transport Officer Jammu cited various reasons for the increase in number of vehicles in Jammu District as well as in other Districts of the state. He said that change in life style, increase in income, availability of easy bank loans and increase in population were among the main reasons. He said that there is no provision in law under which his department could deny the permission for purchase of the new vehicle to a person or persons. Meanwhile many people also related the increase in number of registration of vehicles in Jammu to migration of many people to Jammu from various districts of the state during militancy, added that many businessmen who traveled outside state prefer for Jammu registration number to avoid any inconvenience while traveling as Srinagar registered vehicles are often intercepted and checked. "The government should bring in some legislature for managing and regulating the increase in number of vehicles in the state--- there is also need to develop underground parking, multi layered parking places and construction of more and more flyovers if government is serious to decongest the traffic in Jammu and Srinagar city" said a person applied for purchase of new vehicle at ARTO Jammu office. |
