Srinagar, May 10: After being snubbed by the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) top brass for its failure to connect with the people of Kashmir a few BJP leaders in Srinagar have started claiming that mass membership drive launched by it is getting a "tremendous response."
Sources told Early Times that Kashmir based BJP leaders are working overtime to project "tremendous response" theory as their biggest achievement. In this connection a few BJP leaders held a Mahasampark Abhiyan workshop here and bragged about their achievements. The party also nominated mandal incharges for various Srinagar areas.
The Kashmir based BJP leaders, according to the sources, have taken up this exercise to impress the party high command as they are under pressure to perform or perish. "There is every possibility of government holding elections for Urban Local Bodies in coming months and the BJP high command has made it clear to the Kashmir based leaders to ensure that they reach out to people and ensure that party opens its account in the Valley," said a source.
He said that this time around party high command is in no mood to listen to the excuses and has asked the BJP leaders to see to it that Kashmiri youth are taken in loop and are made aware about the BJP's pro-youth policies. "In the recent past BJP leaders in Kashmir have been claiming that more than five lakh people across the Valley have become its members. The BJP leaders have been asked to prove that party enjoys the support of so many people," said a source.
He said BJP leaders in Kashmir have been asked to organize a rally in coming days as a show of strength so that party high command remains aware about BJP's chances in the ULB polls, which would be announced soon.
A BJP leader while talking to Early Times said, "Party high command is very keen on breaking the ice in Kashmir and it wants party leaders here to ensure that no wrong feedback is provided to BJP leadership as the misinformation ahead of assembly polls upset the calculations of the BJP and punctured its Mission 44 plus."
He said, "We entered into an alliance with PDP but had to pay a heavy price for it. We have compromised on major issues and have been forced to act as second fiddle in the present dispensation. Party high command has made it clear to the BJP leaders that it's an opportunity for them to learn the tricks of the trade."
The BJP leader said that party high command is annoyed at the fact that despite liberal funding and all the possible support, BJP leaders failed to reach out to the grass root level and failed to project the party in a proper way. "BJP has invested a lot in the people who are active in Kashmir and they need to deliver. Claims and counter claims won't help their cause. They have to perform," he added.
The BJP leader claimed that only such people would remain in the party who can deliver and help in BJP gaining the ground in Kashmir. "It's unfortunate that no one wants to be a party worker everyone wants to be a leader," the leader added.
