Our society should learn to respect the farmers | | Nikhil Gupta | 5/11/2015 12:23:51 AM |
| Indian civilization is based on truth and love for all . Even though people with mentality of aurangzeb came to India and caused so much plunder in India and harassed local native Indians so much so that a special tax was imposed on the native Hindus by such shameless people . Britishers also looted Indian people and their favorite words for Indians were dogs , pigs and coolies . One of my friend went to Andaman and Nicobar islands and told me about atrocities of Britishers on the inmates of the cellular jail . There is one Ross Island in the group of Andaman and Nicobar islands where British built their residences all with Indian labour . It is sad to note that britishers used to call Indians by the name of " coolie " . Outsiders like shameless mahmood gaznavi looted India so many times and destroyed so many temples including Somnath temple . Outsiders like Britishers also looted India economically . It is a shame that many Indians became stooges in the hands of the britishers and lived at their mercy and became titular kings , zamindars and Rai Bahudar etc . With the help of such people Britishers were able to rule India . But real warriors like ANANDA GUPTA , DEBA GUPTA , BAGHA JATIN took birth in India and with their efforts and GOD's help India gained independence in August , 1947 . Gandhi Ji united the people and taught them love and peace . It should be noted that gandhi ji took the cause of poor farmers in Champaran, a district in state of Bihar where tens of thousands of landless serfs, indentured labourers and poor farmers were forced to grow indigo and other cash crops instead of the food crops which were necessary for their survival. These goods were bought from them at a very low price. Suppressed by the ruthless militias of the landlords (mostly British), they were given measly compensation, leaving them in extreme poverty. Then in the throes of a devastating famine, the British levied a harsh tax which they insisted on increasing in rate. Without food and without money, the situation was growing progressively unlivable and the peasants in Champaran revolted against conditions in indigo plant cultivation . Gandhi Ji fought against Britishers and forced them to provide some relief to the farmers . Similarly Gandhi Ji did so much for upliftment of the downtrodden and depressed classes who are now known as dalits or schedule castes and schedule tribes . Mahatma Gandhi made the eradication of untouchability one of his goals. He had once said that the way 'Untouchability' was spreading in the Hindu Society, it was against both the man and the God. It was like a poison eating into the very vitals of Hindu religion. In his opinion, it did not even have the sanction of the Hindu scriptures. Living up to this, Mahatma Gandhi declared that the untouchables were 'Harijans' meaning 'the people of God'. The untouchability that was prevalent in India and the privileged section of Indian people who shamefully practiced untouchability was a sort of violence on the less privileged. This harmed more the privileged. Mahatma Gandhi called the less privileged as Harijans (God's men) and the privileged were made to shoulder the responsibility to serve the less privileged and thus undo the wrong done by their predecessors generations after generations. Even though Gandhi Ji was against the reservations to depressed classes as is clear by the Poona Pact but he still did so much for upliftment of the lower classes viz SC/ST/OBC etc . A renowned author Barbara Ward Jackson wrote in her contribution to Mahatma Gandhi Commemoration Volume MAHATMA GANDHI 100 YEARS "In a world that grows steadily more angry and frightened - the rage and the fear mutually reinforcing each other - it is hard to look back to Mahatma Gandhi's kind of leadership without a desperate sense of loss. He loved the poor without hating the rich. He loved the great traditions of Hindu culture without hating the Muslims. He loved his country's liberty without hating the British. He saw evil, misery and injustice as doing even greater harm to the oppressors than to the oppressed. So he loved his "enemies" with compassion and sought radical change by non-violent means since violence harms the man who uses it as much as, if not more than, the one who suffers it." But the India democracy in its present form has become stereotyped where the opposition most of the times oppose the governing apparatus even if the intention of the legislation is good . Taking the example of the land Acquision bill most of the opposition is projecting it as draconian and anti farmer . Recently a political party organised a rally in which a farmer named Gajender singh rajput of Rajasthan did suicide and died . There are many theories on the death of this farmer . Some say it was an accident and the fellow didnot actually wanted to do suicide but accidently fell and rope tightened on his neck and he died . It is bad that a person died unnecessarily and this death was avoidable . Rajputs of Rajasthan are not poor people . History of rajputs of rajasthan is obscure and shrouded in mystery and even mythology . There are many origins ascribed to them but it is a fact that there was no mention of rajputs in old times . Some say that it is the brahmins who made rajputs prominent to suppress the buddhism . I dont believe in such theories because the king is not dependent on anybody including the brahmins etc. There are many mythological and unproven theories in this regard but it is better to see the facts . It is also a fact that Rajputs of Rajasthan served the mughals and had many matrimonial alliances with them . Mughals were outsiders who came to India after running from their native country . Only Rana Pratap ji of Mewar was totally opposed to such alliances and he is respected even now for his resistance . It is also a fact that many seths or rich people of Mewar helped Rana Pratap ji in his fight against the mughals but without much success. Marathas are also known to have collected chauth and sardeshmukhi from the rajputs . Rajputs of Rajastahan are not known to do farming etc . Farming according to brahminic rule falls under shudra category or the worker class category . But in the fertile lands of Panjab and Harayana farming is considered better than doing bussiness or doing a job . The Jats of panjab and harayana are mostly farming communities and very influential also . They consider farming at number one , bussiness at number two and job at number three . The jats of these regions are among the richest farmers in our country . But in modern India many people have taken to farming and we see almost all communities and castes and classes doing the farming . In rural areas farming sector gives employment to large number of people . In the case of the suicide of Gajender singh rajput it is found that Gajender had a very good bussiness of Rajasthani Tubans . Whatever be the case it is very sad that he died in such a manner . But his death has evoked sharp response from many sections of Indian society and people are forced to think why the farmer who gives food to people should die in such a manner . Whatever be the brahmanic rules I consider farming as very noble thing and in my view our society should have respect for the farmers . The farmers in our country should be given adequate resources and help so that they can grow crops and feed the teeming millions . It is also known that in old times the poor farmers were forced to take loans from the seths and sahukars who used to loot them by way of oppressive interest rates . Even now this thing has not completely ended . Just like untouchability , the oppression of the farmers by the sahukars and seths should end immediately . The modern Indian banks should give soft loans to the farmers and the farmers should get reasonable price for their produce . Lastly I will just say that no farmer in our country should die for want of the resources and our society should learn to respect the farmers .
