Drabu called in Delhi to explain opposition | | | to GST Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 21: The Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu, who is already in controversy for this recruitment policy, which though is being reviewed, has now unilaterally decided against implementing General Sales Tax. The finance minister, has been called to Delhi to explain his view against the GST, which is being flagged as one of the major tax reforms in the country. Though, the GST bill, has been sent to the select committee of the Rajya Sabha, the BJP government is quite hopeful of getting it passed, as it is not as contentious as is the land acquisition bill. "The BJP can't expect its coalition partner to speak against this bill. It is an attempt to streamline the fractured tax structure and also will help in shoring up the revenues, which in turn will help the states also. Drabu has been called to explain his position," said a senior official in the finance ministry. The union finance ministry believes that Art 370 can't come in the way of the implementing the GST. "Art 370 has more of political connotations than the economic. And it has been used by political parties in the valley for political gains rather than helping the state economy. The politics can't come in the way of the tax reform," said the senior official. The BJP has also told the finance minister Drabu that if the PDP is so keen on not disturbing the special constitutional position, than it can make up for revenues on its account rather than banking on the Centre. "Drabu was most forthcoming in welcoming getting favourable returns from the 14th finance commission. Then, he didn't say getting favour could be against the special constitutional status of the State. The finance minister, can't be selective in appeasing a section of the Kashmir, for political gains," said the official. |
