Early Times Report
Jammu, May 21: J&K Affairs cell in the Ministry of Home at Centre is just not having its prime focus on Kashmir related policies and programmes but follows this in principle for other activities as well. The newsletter published every month by this wing has emphasis and efforts with regard to content completely on Kashmir, conveniently ignoring Ladakh and Jammu region as if these do not exist at all. At least that is what the issues of last two months reflect vividly through the length and breadth of the content and stories carried.
The J&K Affairs cell publishes this mini magazine which it has named as Jammu & Kashmir Update. This was a unique initiative taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs and in words mentioned in the Editor's desk , this is meant to showcase positive developments taking place in the entire state. It also claims the ambit of the magazine covers all the three regions of the state with focus on achievements of the people. So far so good , as the objective states in loud and bold words. But reality doesn't reflect that claim, for the whole attention and concentration is on stories on Kashmir, be that on development front, tourism and heritage or success stories of youth in diverse fields.
To corroborate this observation, one only needs to have a glance through issues of last two months. While in the March issue, the Heritage column carries a story on Mughal gardens as monuments of Kashmir, the Development corner has Udaan as focus area with success stories under this scheme and feedback , so to say positive response of the beneficiaries of this central scheme. Similarly, this corner carried a story how budding entrepreneurs get exposure at Kashmir Design summit that was organised some time back in Srinagar. As for tourism segment, the story is on how Bollywood is once again showing interest in Kashmir. The March issue also takes pride in showcasing the success stories of youth of Kashmir in diverse fields, besides of course the activities of Army specially conducted for flood victims etc.
Same pattern is followed in the issue of news magazine for the month of April. It carries cultural events for flood victims in Kashmir, Udaan's flight and feedback mentioning some recruitment drives under the scheme in most of the districts in Kashmir. The only 'aberration' in this segment is the mention of Samba district and that is the only word, so to say place from Jammu mentioned in the news magazine, besides a picture of winter carnival at Patnitop in the tourism segment , in contrast to major space devoted to a story how adventure camps are being organized to woo tourists to Kashmir Valley in a big way.
The reference of all this is in no way to contest to demean what has been carried about Kashmir but the moot question remains that are those at the helm of J&K Affairs completely oblivious or ignorant of other two regions and developments taking or not taking place in Ladakh and Jammu or is this being pursued deliberately as a matter of policy…?
