Mirwaiz’s shutdown call evokes poor response | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 21: Barring a few stray incidents in down -town Srinagar, the shutdown called by Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq evoked poor response in most parts of the Valley on Thursday. Hurriyat dove had called for the shutdown to commemorate the 25th death anniversary of his late father Moulvi Mohammad Farooq, who was shot dead on this day at his Nageen residence in 1990. There was no bandh especially in the Hyderpora area falling in the outskirts of city a posh area where the Hurriyat hardliner, Syed Ali Shah Geelani resides. This has been an indication that the people in Kashmir are fed up with the 26 year long turmoil, killings and hatred and want to lead a peaceful life now. The traffic on most city roads and its outskirts especially in Civil Lines area of Capital city plied normally and also all the business establishments functioned normally during the day. The Government offices and educational institutions also functioned normally in the Valley as people did not respond the bandh call given by the Hurriyat (M). The credit goes to the leadership of coalition government which also took extra ordinary steps in reaching out the common man in Kashmir to make him understand the basic truth. The pro- people and developmental programme initiated by coalition have also generated high hopes among the people of Kashmir so they don’t want to fall in the trap of those elements once again who put the Valley on the path of devastation and destruction over these years, said Abdul Samad a trader in Civil Lines area of Srinagar. People have suffered a lot over these years of turmoil and last year’s devastation caused by flash floods has also given lot of setback to economy of Valley. The people want end to violence and restoration of peace, he said. In response to a question on failure of bandh call Samad said `` We have observed bandhs for last 25 years continuously and now we want to get rid of the same’’,. Those who misled us on the name of so called Azadi etc are themselves enjoying at the cost of common Kashmiri, he said. ``The Hurriyat should wind up its shop now and leave the people of Kashmir at Almighty’s mercy,” said Yousf Rehan a transporter in Srinagar. He said transport industry suffered heavy loss during turmoil and last year’s flash floods and no one came to its rescue. ``We had to bear the brunt of the turmoil most and now we have decided not to pay heed to the diktats of separatists,’’ he added. He said this is the reason that traffic plied on almost all routes normally today and transporters did not pay any heed to bandy call. There was no response f the bandy call in Budgam, Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam and other districts of South and Central Kashmir. The entire market in Budgam districts and its other towns like,Humhama, Hyderpora, Yachgam, Chadura etc were open and traffic plied normally. Even there was more rush in passenger busses than the normal days today. The traffic also plied normally in Shopian , Pampore, Pulwama, Kulgam and other areas. However on National Highway the movement of vehicular traffic remained suspended due to repairs to Highway at different places. There was hustle and bustle as usual at picturesque spots of Valley including the world famous Dal lake, Chashma Shahi, Nishat and Shalmar gardens were the rush of domestic as well as other tourists was as normal. |
