Scam in SW department, expired nutrition items supplied to Anganwadi centres | Crime Branch raids some centres, seizes nutrition items | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 21: Department of Social Welfare is once again in news and this time too it is for the wrong reasons. What is more astounding that the recent development is very much related with the nutrition of the children? Sources told Early Times that a major scam in the Department of Social Welfare involving supply of expired nutrition items has come up of late. The expired nutrition items were supplied to scores of Anganwadi centres in the Central Kashmir's Budgam district. "The scam involving lakhs of rupees came up few days back when it was found that the quality of the nutrition items is not up to the mark. When the things were analyzed in a proper manner it was found that the nutrition items had expired many months back. Luckily no child developed health complications after eating the expired nutrition items," said sources. Sources said that nutrition items including pulses were expired and also of inferior quality thereby posing a serious threat to the lives of children who consumed these items. The nutrition items were supplied to scores of anganwadi centres in the district and as such it could have led to health problems for thousands of school children in the district. As the news about the supply of expired nutrition items spread like wild fire the Crime Branch of Jammu & Kashmir Police raided some of the anganwadi centres in Budgam district. The Crime Branch sleuths seized a huge consignment of the expired nutrition items and destroyed it so that they are not used anymore. "Under the law action needs to be taken against the person who supplied these expired nutrition items to the Anganwadi centres in the Budgam district. At the same time one cannot rule out involvement of officials of Department of Social Welfare in this whole episode. Therefore, meaningful investigations need to be carried out so that the real picture emerges," said sources. Sources said that cases of food poisoning of the children in the Budgam district could be due to the usage of the expired nutrition items. They said that a proper probe alone can settle the dust in this regard and that stern action against the 'culprits' would send a strong message to the people involved in the supply of nutrition items to the anganwadi centres across the state. "Time and again complaints are received with respect to the supply of inferior quality of nutrition items. The latest episode is more shameful and it is important to fix the responsibility in this case. A departmental enquiry should be carried out so that unscrupulous elements are identified and punitive action is taken against them," said sources. |
