Govt dismantles structures at Panta Chowk | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 3: All the structures at Pantachowk on Srinagar-Jammu road were Tuesday bulldozed as, according to authorities, the people had not evicted their dwellings despite having received government compensation. The people, however, alleged that the government had paid them very meagre amount as compensation and many of them were yet to receive it. The authorities on the direction of Deputy Commissioner Srinagar on Tuesday dismantled as many as two dozen shops and residential houses at Pantachowk. The operation was lead by the officials from Revenue and Srinagar Municipal Corporation. Heavy deployment of police was made in the area during demolition drive . The residents opposed the move alleging Government has not paid them adequate and fair compensation. Pertinent to mention here that in order to ensure road widening in Srinagar, many demolition drives have been undertaken by the authorities in Srinagar city for the last a couple of years. At many places this process is still going on. The Mufti-led government is planning to undertake such demolition drives in other parts of the city for the construction of flyovers and other roads. "All this is a very positive development indeed, but the amount which the affected families and individuals in Srinagar city are paid is mere peanuts and on the other hand the affected people in other cities of country get very handsome amount as compensation and the reason for that is that all the states in India have implemented New Land Acquisition Act and how unfortunate we are that this law hasn't been enacted in Jammu & Kashmir" said Dr Mushtaq Khan, a social activist. "Not only the people of Srinagar city, the people of Jammu city are also suffering due to the construction of new roads and flyovers. In the absence of the new Land Acquisition Act in state the people are the direct sufferers as they get half the amount for their acquired property. Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Syed must provide a fair compensation to the families whose land and property have been acquired for the purpose of road widening in various parts of Srinagar especially in Pantachowk area and for making that happen he must enact New Land Acquisition Act in J&K " said Mohammad Rafiq of Panta Chowk. Residents of Panta chowk alleged that they haven't been properly rehabilitated and have been paid even less price than the actual market rate in the area. They alleged that National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) pays four times more compensation to the affected people in other states but in J&K people get payment which is much less than the market rate of the land and the reason is the absence of New Land Acquisition Act. |
