Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources visits Shalimar, Lidder | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 3: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources headed by Mr. Hukum Singh, MP, visited Explanatory Tube Well at Shalimar today. The team was apprised that sensing the water problem in Shalimar area including the Shalimar Garden, the Central Ground Water Board dug the Tube Well in 2009 aimed at providing alternate irrigation facilities to the people as well as for the Garden which is being visited by thousands of people daily. Stressing the need for conservation of Kashmir's water bodies, the chairman asked the state government functionaries to ensure judicious use of water so that sufficient quantity of water can be used for other purposes including power generation. He said in the rest of the country 10% water is meant for micro-irrigation facilities while as in Kashmir there is vast scope of construction of Hydroelectric projects to generate sufficient energy. Committee also visited Mughal Hammam built inside the Shalimar Garden by Emperor Jahangir. They were informed that the Hammam was renovated by the Floriculture Department to restore it to its pristine glory. Later, the Committee visited Nallah Lidder in Pahalgam and took stock of the damages caused by the September 2014 floods. Secretary PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Parvaiz Malik, Chief Engineer, I&FC Er Javeed Jaffar, Superintending Engineer Hydraulic Srinagar/Budgam Er Imtiyaz Ahmad, Executive Engineers, officers of Central Water Commission and a team of senior officers of various departments accompanied the Committee during the visit. |
