Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 7: After failing to get the grant or loan from the state government to set right the infrastructure damaged due to September 2014 flood the educational institutions have started harassing the students while asking them to pay flood relief fund.
A group of parents told Early Times that Principal of Girls Higher Secondary School, Kothi Bagh is demanding a sum of Rs. 1000 per student as the flood relief fund failing which their admission shall be cancelled.
The parents said that the school authorities every day 'coerces' students to furnish Rs. 1000 or they will be discharged from the school. These parents said that at first they didn't pay any attention to this, but they sensed trouble as their daughters refused to go to the school.
"My daughter asked for a sum of Rs. 1000 which she said was demanded by the school authorities. At first I didn't take it seriously but I sensed trouble once she refused to go to the school without being paid the sum of money," said a parent from Srinagar wishing not to be named.
This parent said that the students at the school have been told that there are orders from education minister, Naeem Akhtar which he passed on during a meeting in the secretariat very recently.
Similarly another parent from Srinagar had the same story to tell. He also said that each day school authorities impress upon the students to deposit Rs. 1000 or they will be discharged from the school. This has created a sense of fear among the student, said this parent.
This parent went on saying that when they are themselves the flood victims, how come they pay the flood relief fund. As per this parent it is the highhandedness of the school authorities.
When contacted Director School Education Kashmir, Showkat Ahmad Beigh said that some of the parents are blowing things out of proportion.
"No, it is not true that the students are being asked to deposit Rs. 1000 as the flood relief fund. Some time back Education Minister declared this school as the 'Model School'. He donated 5 lakh rupees to the school and requested the staff members to donate one day's salary to the school. I also donated one day's salary to the school," said the Director School Education.
Beigh said that the same request was made to the students to donate Rs. 1000 to the school voluntarily and according to him there was no question of harassment or force. He further assured that if any parent has grievances, these will be addressed without wasting any time.
