Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 7: The bad condition of Jammu roads has been a cause of concern for the people all over the State in general and Jammu region in particular. Since the roads were damaged completely during the last year's incessant rains and flash floods followed by heavy rains this Spring also the Government has failed to repair the same with the result the people are facing many hardships. Almost all city roads have become death traps but there is no one to look into the same.
Due to bad condition of all roads in the Jammu region and increasing rush of traffic over them the people are exposed to increasing risk of fatal accidents also but it appears the same is not an issue for the authorities at the helm of affairs.
Though the coalition government is in office for alst three months now but it has failed to take an initiative to repair the roads which have been totally damged due to heavy rains.
The Jammu -Akhnoor road which is often witnessing traffic jams during the peak hours due to mushrooming educational institutions and community halls along it right from Paloura to Nagbani, the Government has shelved the proposal of its four lanning. According to highly placed sources there is no headway in widening and four lanning of this road on which the number of road accidents is also on increase. There are often traffic this busy road during the peak hours especially in the morning, afternoon and evening. The traffic jams are also witnessed on this road during marriage season and some times people get trapped in the jam for hours tighter, sources added. Sources said though people had high expectations from new government that soon after coming to power it will take immediate steps to finalize the project of four lanning of the Akhnoor road but all their hopes dashed to ground as no headway was made in this regard.
Presently the road is also in bad condition as it has developed deep ditches at Paloura, Muthi, Bakshi Nagar and various other places. The criminal negligence on the part of authorities to renovate this important road which links Rajouri and Poonch districts as well as Akhnoor belt with rest of the State has generated a lot of public resentment and people are up in arms against the Government.
Not only the this vital road but the condition of other interior city roads as well as in the rural areas is also bad. The Janipur road has been dug by ERA again for laying of sewerage pipes which has also created impediments in smooth running of vehicular traffic on this road. Besides at various areas the roads have been dug by other agencies either for laying electricity pipes or cables and this process goes unending. At various places the roads have been dug two months after they were metaled and black topped showing the total lack of coordination between various government agencies.
